UPSET AT FAIRMOUNT PARK Witchmount Takes Measure of Medley in Handicap. ♦ Track Conditions Responsible for Jiumcrous V Withdrawals — Btnek Darling Victor ia Fourth Race. * COLLINSVILLE. 111., June 18.— The St. Louis Browns Claiming Handicap, with a _ purse of ,200, featured todays racing pro- M vided at Fairmount Park and the race had ?k but four starters, owing to adverse track o of conditions. Upsetting the calculations again, ti the C. Irby-own;d four-year-old colt Witch-mount accounted for the purse in the best c race of the afternoon, being ridden to his , success by jockey K. Ilorvath. t Witchmount was a handy winner at the I direct expense of Phil neuters heavily backed Medley, the latter being much the f best of the other two starters and, after being beaten by a length margin by the T winner. Medley landed many lengths in ad- t vance of A. G. Woodmans The Show Off, the latter finishing third. Turple Light was the I only other starter and the C. PI. Trotter A racer and The Show Off were always badly outpaced throughout, excepting for a 1 brief period during the running of the first J quarter mile. Witchmount began fast and, taking com- mand in Cue first eiuarter, proceeded to hold * sway to the end, but was called upon to withstand several challenges from the fast- ■ gaining Medley as they raced into the stretch. ] Medley raced up to within a head of the J leader and seemed ab ut to overtake him. but could not quite get up and, when not good enough to pass Witchmount, tired in J the hard drive they staged in the final eighth. J Witchmount held Medley safe and easily out- finished him for the purse. I TURK VTr.MNG WEATHER. I Overcast skies carried a threat of rain dur-ing the day, but the threatened rain failed to materialize, while sultry conditions, with almost a torrid heat, prevailed. The track , was in a heavy state for the early races, . but was rapidly drying out as the afternoon progressed and by the time for the fifth race . the track was slow. Good time over it was . recorded by the winners of the fifth and sixth races. Witchmount galloped the three-quar- ters in the good time of 1 :1375 in the dull going. The three-quarters mile race, which opened the sport and brought out a good field of platers, resulted in another E. K. Bryson-jockey [«. Morris victory when the four-yeai- ■ old Colonel Seth was home an easy winner in advance of G. Taylors Clay Figeon, one of the lightly thought of starter*. Play Hour raced well and was rewaided with third place. F. Hayes Whizzing Cloud was backed into strong favoritism and caused the form players a big loss when he offended disgracefully, finishing well back of the leaders at the end and soundly beaten. Whizzing Cloud raced into the lead after , the start and made the pace to the far turn, where he was then headed briefly by Sheriff j Seth, but the favorite quit badly thereafter and proceeded to drop clear out of contention. Sheriff Seth was another that gave way completely when the real racing began and quit when Colonel Seth challenged him for the lead. In the dally race for maiden two-year-olds an upset was furnished by Mrs. 10. K. Ramseys jronngstar Euonymous, a Craigangower colt, which took kindly to the going and by a display of speed at all stages of the five and a half furlongs made every post a winning one. Euonymous led his nearest opponent, Vanquish, by a two-lengths margin at the finish, but was under hard riding near the end when his rider, J. J. McTague. had to give his mount a severe shaking up to save the decision from Vanquish. Vanquish was racing in eh se pursuit of the leader at all stages after having shaken off Vela, a forward contender, in the first three-eighths and then was catching the winner in the final seventy yards. Discreet, an extreme outsider, managed to race Into third place in the last eighth, but was hard pressed to outstay Bless Her Heart for the short end of the purse. The Audley Farm Stables Bless Her Heart ruled favorite in this, but she fared poorly at the start, being almost as BOOd as left at the post, and then closed an immense gap. VETERAV PAROLE II. SCORES. The first favorite to score was Jenkins and Perrys veteran Parole II., which was heavily backed, which vanquished a small field of good ones which started with him over a mile and a sixteenth. Parole II., well ridden by A. Tiner, was master of the situation from soon after the start, for he assumed command in an advantageous position while on the first turn and. proceeding to hold sway under restraint- easily held the strong challenging Golden Wanderer safe in the last quarter, reae-hing the finish two lengths in advance. Golden Wanelerer was as easily best of the other three that started and, after racing past Up anel Down near the far turn, held second place safe to the finish, but was not goe d enough for the winner. Up and Down mountered little trouble in leading home Mrs. Snyder and Lady Fan-shawe for third place. Mrs. R. Pollards crack two-year-old Black Darling made gr od on the occasion of his first appearance under colors at this track when he vanquished a shifty band of juveniles over nve ;.nd a half furlongs to score another victory for the backers of the favorites. Black Darling ruled a pronounced favorite in this race. The Pollard colorbearer, under a good ride by jockey J. Parmalee. and away fast, took a safe lead quickly as if much the best to make every post a winning one. Tanglefoot one of the lightly backed .ones, surprised by racing into second place and big numbers were posted on the mutuel return board for the place and show backers of this one. There was also much ado about Sambo ., an E. K. Dry son starter, which managed to account for the third end of the purse. R. S. Clark sold the four-year-old Lady Fanshawe to his trainer J. O. Whitu w and • I*ady Panshawe raced in the interests of VvluUow in todays jfejt . gjflfe
