1 BY NARROW MARGIN - M George McCrann Furnishes Big Surprise at Latonia. * Defeats Lord Braedalbane by a-Nose in Chief Attraction of Wednesdays Program. LATONIA, Ky.. June 12.— George McCrann, the rank outsider from the stable of the Serenata Farm, climaxed this afternoons racing at Latonia with a big surprise, when in a spectacular finish he defeated Desha Breckinridges Lord Braedalbane by a nose, to take the winning honors in the Rotary Club Purse, the chief attraction on a progrgem offered over a muddy track. Behind the mentioned pair were five others from among the three-year-olds and older performers, with R» S. Clarks Lion Heart taking third, four lengths back, and a like distance in advance of Uptime, the offending favorite. George McCrann. carrying an impost of 113 pounds, and ridden by Walter Lilley, was required to run the distance in 1:41%, a noteworthy performance over the water-soaked, slippery course, and his success came before another large patronage. The generous crowd braved showery weather, which contributed to the muddy going brought about by heavy rains during the forenoon. While favorites came in for average success, several disappointments among their number received confident backing and their downfalls were quite shocking to their larpe following. The second successful choice turned up in Gallant Knight, the capable two-year-old in the Audley Farm Stable, and his easy win over five others in the sixth race, or South Hills Purse, completed a double for this establishment, which took down honors in the fourth race with Niciragua. GALLANT KNIGHT EASILY. Gallant Knight sprinted into a long lea.i after three-eighths and held it easily for the remainder of the five and a half furlomrs. Coral Beach took second place well in front of Spanish Jack, the latter tiring in the drive. Coral Beach suffered when he was blocked by Eil-Weir when the latter swerved from the center to the inside of the course in the stretch. But for the adverse luck ha would have been closer up, but hardly a menace for the victor, which won well in hand. Under an exceptionally strong ride by Earl Pool. R. S. Clarks three-year-old Herrick scored his first win since his victory in last years renewal of the Harold Stakes, when he defeated Eskimo. Pigeon Hole and Virado by short margins in the three-quarters selling race which opened todays racing. Pigeon Hole and Virado shared favoritism and. while the dash was bitterly contested at every stage, neither was able to head the more successful pair at any time. Eskimo was indulged with the pacemaking and, holding on resolutely, it was only in the final few strides that the winner succeeded in heading him. Pigeon Hole raced close to the leaders all the way, while Virados inability to find sufficient racing room on the inside, when ready in the stretch, hurt his chances and" he dropped back sharply in the final stages. SIS AGNES TO THE FORE. Sewell Combs saddled another winner when S. C. Lynes Sis Agnes, which was making her initial start, easily accounted for the second race, which brought out nine maiden juvenile fillies. The winner displayed the most speed from the start, and proving herself much the best, sprinted into decisive lead after reaching the stretch, and won easily, four lengths in advance of Zircon. The latter, after forcing the winners pace to the stretch, dropped back in the final quarter, but showed a belated burst of speed near the end and wore down Truly Movin for second place. The race had its disappointments in Sweeping Willow and Dorita, the latter showing dull form, while the former tired after showing brief early speed. Billie Leonard, the public choice, with jockey Heupel, made up the winning combination in the third race, over one mile and seventy yards, for which there were eight starters from among the cheaper plater three-year-olds. Eager Play accounted for second place in a close finish, with Chiz and Mary McCIain. Heupel rated the winner kadi of the early pace and, sending him up slowly after reaching the second turn, had him in front shortly after reaching the stretch, where he withstood a challenge from Eager Ilay. then raced on to win drawing away. I.amkin, which Cooler sent across most oC the others in the first eighth, tired fast after showing speed to the stretch. Well suited by the footing, the Audley Farms well-backed three-year-old Nicaragua set his own pace and lasted in game fashion to defeat the older Cold Bet by a nose for the purse in the fourth race, another claiming affair, and also decided over three-quarters. Royal Son led the others and, finishing with a rush, was only a neck hack of ■ Ml Continued on twenty-tint page. BY NARROW MARGIN Continned from first page. Gold Bet at the end. It was one of the closest finishes of the afternoon. Apprentice H. Schutte, who had the winning mount, played a big part in his mounts success as he rated him well and made an extremely strong finish in his successful endeavor to stave off the dangerous and fast finishing Gold Bet and Royal Son. But for some early speed by Zurich, the other showed little of note. Showing sudden improvement, Tony Joe and Lucky Xenora, beaten off in their previous races, finished first and second as named in the one mile and seventy yards race for plater thrce-ycar-olds at the end of the program. Tony Joe enhanced his chances by causing a bad jam in the run to the first turn, then followed close in the wake of the-pacemaking Lucky Xenora and wore her down in the final drive. Peter Dixon took third place well in front of Superlove and Blind Hills, which enjoyed the most backing. Florian got away from an exercise boy this morning and ran away three miles. This necessitated his withdrawal from the opening* race.
