MUDDY AT H0MEW00D -♦ Paul Bunyan and Water Lad Score in Feature Races. 0 — Severson Colorbearer Benefits by Interfering with Djinn in Stretch — Vittoria Wins. • HOMEWOOD, 111.. June 13.— Muddy track racing was again the rule at Washingt r: Park after the first race had been decided. A heavy storm occurred shortly after the-horses had finished in the opening race and the rain converted the course into a circle of mud. The accompanying darkness during most of the afternoon made it difficult at times to distinguish the colors with accuracy. There was a let up in the downpour with t!i -conclusion of the fifth race, whi h held the stellar place on the card and brought five good horses to the post to race one mile for the ,500 purse. It resulted in a spirited contest in the early stages when the quintette raced closely grouped r.n.i when the stretch was reached it still appeared close, for Djinn and Paul Bunyan drew away from the others and began a : spectacular duel. It was of short duration, however, for Paul Bunyan. aided by the in-! terference to which he subjected Djinn dunns: ; s. period of the stretch drive, drew away in the last sixteenth to win easily. After suffering interference by being bumped ami crossed, Djinn seemed to give way completely and almost fell when he was forc.« Into the deeper going next to the inner rail. He was sufficiently in advance of the othevs not to be in jeopardy of losing second place. ]Chip finished in advance of Symphorosa, with , McGomsle in last place. The stewards de- • hated after questioning the riders on Djinn ■ jind Paul Bunyan, but did not disturb the placing. WATER LAD IX FRONT. The fourth race, over three-quarters, shared Interest with the feature and some good ones Started, with Donnay, Aleader and Lillian T. absorbing most attention. In the running, however. Water Lad had little difficulty scurrying into a lead when called on and WW ■with much in reserve from Donnay, which eame fast in the stretch after having dropped back at the start. Lillian T.s chances went glimmering when her rider, Shropshire, took her completely out of it at the start. She followed far out •f it thereafter. Another big crowd was on hand to view the •port in spite of the threatening weather. The La Brae Stables Altavar was the victor in the opening race, in which two-year-olds started. McDermotts hustling tactics auid alertness at the barrier gave Altavar an advantage at the start and subsequently enabled him to take a long early lead that stood him in good stead, for the colt tired in the last sixteenth and it required considerable urging to keep him in advance of the others. Sidney Grant, after beginning tardily and being forced wide most of the way, gained fast and pressed the winner hard for the victory. Port Gar had been the closest follower of Altavar for half a mile, but she tired near the end. but was good enough to outstay Parnill Boy for third place. Par-nell Boy was the favorite. LA BRAE STABLE. Another purse was taken down by the La Brae Stable when its Vittoria was an easy • winner of the second race, in which eleven platers started over three-quarters. Vittoria •was benefited by the sloppy going, resulting from the hard rain after the finish of the opening race and, displaying good speed from a good start, took a long early lead and was not seriously threatened in the last quarter. jSalona raced into prominence when beginning jthe stretch drive and, continuing steadily. • moved into second place a sixteenth out and ;held Gold Ridge safe thereafter. Peggy Lee raced in close pursuit of the leader until the last eighth, where she suddenly gave way. Governor Pratt, a well-backed starter, was never prominent in the race. Darkness overspread the course when the .Starters reached the post for the third race and it was difficult to distinguish the colors ■ during some parts of the race. Haymaker bc-•Tan fast and led until darkness obstructed the view. When they emerged into light again Badger Face had taken command, with Moderation Riving him a battle, and in the la.-~t Sixteenth the pair were joined by Riff Ralf snd the trio fought it to the end. Badger Face winning by a neck, with the same margin separating Moderation from Riff Raff. Vimont won the sixth race from Color Blind, with Jack Hawksley in third place. There was considerable swerving and bumping by the first named pair, Vimont finally corning away in the last sixteenth. Color Blind had disposed of Blewaway earlier and, strongly ridden near the end, managed to outstay the fast-finishing Jack Hawksley. The latter had to strive hard in the final period to wear down Blewaway. The latter showed the most early speed and began tiring after meeting with interference in the strcteh. when the swerving of Vimont and Color Blind began.
