BRICE WINS STEEPLECHASE ♦ Jumping Race Feature of Queens County Clubs Program. ♦ Alwington Bolly Triumphs Over Other Juveniles in Opening Contest — Blarney In Second Race. ♦ NEW YORK, N. T., June 13— Brice, the old geld d son of Huon and Rosalie, that races for the Brookmeade Stable, was winner of the feature offering of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct yesterday, when he scored in the short course of the Bayside Steeplechase Handicap. Brice had come out of a previous race at Belmont Park decidedly lame, but Gwyn Tompkins had a fit horse for this race and he was well ridden by Jeffcott to beat out Thomas Hitchcocks good filly Darkness, on which G. H. "Pete" Bostwick had the mount. H M. Users Taras Hall was third and while Brice won with something to spare, all three were close enough together to furnish an excellent finish. Beelzebub was the orte to dash away from the start in the lead, but he jumped badly at the first fence and there was no stage of the race that he really settled down to the jumping that made him such a good three-year-old. Charlie Mergler messed him about so badly as to make his performance just a bit more disappointing. Volunteer was right up with the leaders while Jeffcott was content to rate Drice close after the leaders, though It was apparent the old fellow, under his feather of 133 pounds, could go to the leaders at any time. Mr. Bostwick had Darkness under a steady restraint and she, too. was well within striking distance, with Taras Hall still further back. It was not until the second turn of the course that Mr. Bostwick made any move with Darkness and the filly was going so easily that she looked all over a winner, but Beelzebub was still in the running while Rubigny. though he lost some ground on the turn, was also going well. BRICE LOOMS UP. It was in the run home through the front field to the finish that there came a closing up and at the last jump Brice came into the picture. He was right alongside Darkness at the last jump and from there to the finish he held her safe to be winner by half a length, while the filly beat the fast finishing Taras Hall a like distance for second place. The tired Volunteer was a distant fourth, while Beelzebub, when beaten at the last jump, was eased up in last place by Mergler. W. T. Andersons Blarney, by a game finish in the final eighth, led home a big field of platers over six and a half furlongs in the third race. He scored by a neck, but he was going away from William H. Doziers Mortgage with M. A. Callahans Margaret CM easily beating Double Dom for third. There was some little delay before the horses would take their posinons in the stalls, but the start was a good one, with Margaret Cal a bit more alert than the others. Mortgage was right after the filly when High Game, beginning well outside, was rushed ir.to contention by Peternell, while Blarney, who had the outsid ■ position, was well back and at some disadvantage going to the turn. Margaret Cal and Mortgage continued to show the way and Clairdine moved up into contention, but all the time Blarney was gradually working his way up on the inside. In the final eighth Brice brought him along with his winning rush. Mortgage, in the meant:me, had Margaret Cal beaten, but right at the end Blarney swept past to be the winner by a neck. WIMI ALL THE WAT. The opening number was a five-eighths dash for plater juveniles, under claiming conditions, and Alwington Dolly, racing for the Alwington stable, was winner all the way. P. H. Faulconers Roman Blaze was the only one to give a semblance of a contest, and he MM rather a close second, while Benjamin Blocks Morpat was a distant third, to beat the only other starter, W. C. Smiths Luggage. Mrs. T. R. Queens Joe Marrone III. came back wall a good race in the Borrow Claiming Handicap and he was an easy winner over Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilts Croyden, with J. McPhersons Genial Host beating William Moores Spectacular for third place. This was another good start from the •tails, and. as was to be expected. Croyden was the one to race into the command, but Joe Khnm III. went right along with him and Wood God was also showing early speed. Judge Bartlclt headed the others and Genial Host was further back, while Gadalong and Comet were farther hack. Croyden held to his lead until well into the stretch, but he could not shake off Joe Marrone III. and in the final eighth the old horse raced past him to be home an easy ■Winner by two lengths. Croyden easily saved second place when he was three lengths before the fast finishing Genial Host and Spectacular was another three lengths away. There came a disqualification in the running of the fifth ra.-e, when Conclave, from the W. R. Coe stable, after finishing first, was set back for stretch interference with Murky cloud from the H. P. Whitney stable, and Murky Cloud was placed first, moving Dixie Dreamer, from W. T. Waggoners stable, into second place, and third was awarded Snooze, another from the Whitney stable. Snooze was the one to show the way in the early stages and Dixie Dreamer was racing forwardly until she suffered some roughing that may have cost her the race. An eighth out it looked as though the Whitney pair would be first and second. Murky Cloud was racing so strongly, but Conclave finally fought her way to the front, but as she did so, she swerved over sharply and Workman snatched Murky Cloud up to prevent b-ing put over the fence. After this h ipp-ning. Con-lave came on to win, but Workmans claim of foul was promptly allowed and his mount was awarded the purse. Another field of cheap platers started in the six and a half furlongs race at the end Of the card, it heing a split of the third race. There was a long delay at the post, for wliieh Venezeula was chiefly to blame. This saw Joy Bock, from the stable of H. Teller Archibald, the winner by a goodly .margin over Venezuela, with Folflex finishing third. Workman rushed Joy Rock into a long lead •uid, saving ground all the way nursed hun along skilfully and he was at no time seriously threatened. Yciiezeula was slow leaving the stalls .anil he finished with a rush through the stretch, but could not catch the winner. Golflex was knocked back shortly after the start and was coming again at the end. ;
