McLeans Silverdale, an addition to the field for Saturdays running of the American Derby at Washington Park, this morning worked a mile and an eighth in 1 :58 over a muddy course at Latonia. The three-year-old was well in hand throughout the fine trial and went the quarter in :24%. half mile in :48%, three-quarters in 1 :16% and the mile in 1 AS%. He was scheduled for shipment to the Homewood track Thursday night and jockey A. Pascuma will leave Latonia Friday night to ride him in the rich stake. Following that race. Silverdale will be transferred to Bainbridge Park, where he will contest the Ohio Derby a week later. In a measure, much of the old glamor In connection with the American Derby is being revived. Photographs of the more prominent of the candidates for Saturdays race may be seen in the windows of loop stores, while a tally-ho of "yesterday" carrying a bevy of handsome young ladies attracted considerable attention as it paraded through the various downtown thoroughfares. State street is also decorated with banners and pennants. Looks like a big day for Chicago — with all roads leading to new Washington Park. Reports from the leading hotels indicate that many out-of-town visitors will be here for Derby day. The Eastern contingent of prominent sportsmen is expected to be quite large. In addition to the 0,000 stakes the Washington Park management has decided on a massive silver trophy as an additional prize for the winner. The trophy is a silver ship and of ornate design. Col. Matt J. Winn and general manager C. W. Hay are spending some busy hours putting into effect their plans that will make for the comfort and convenience of the enormous crowd that will be at Washington Park to view the Derby running. The advance sale of reservations indicates that there will be a monster throng at the course. The club house boxes have all been sold and there are few remaining ones in the main grandstand. Reservations in the numerous dining rooms have also gone beyond expectations and indicate that the social element will entertain in the fashion customary at the Kentucky Derby. The Illinois Central railroad is making extra effort to handle the big crowd on Derby Day with dispatch. Beginning at 11 a. m., special trains will be run continuously on a five-minute schedule from Randolph street direct to the track, with stops at Continued on twenty-first page. At least twenty-five trains will be used, and if more are needed they will be available, according to the statement of traffic manager J. V. Lan-nigan. The racing Saturday will begin at 2 p. m., and owners and trainers are advised that scratch time for that day will be 7 a. m. W. J. Salmons Dr. Freeland. winner of the Preakness Stakes, and his stable companion, African, which finished third in the Preakness Stakes and gave Blue Larkspur such a tussle in the Belmont Stakes, arrived Thursday afternoon and were transferred to their newly built quarters. They were joined by others, including Black Diamond and Snowy, which came from Canada. The additional racers that W. R. Coe contemplates campaigning, including Igloo and Dail, American Derby starters, will arrive tomorrow, advices being received that they left New York at noon Thursday. The advance guard of newspaper men from other sections of the country here to report the American Derby came this afternoon and included Phocion Howard and Vernon Sanders. Two of the leading broadcasting stations in these parts will broadcast the Derby. The movietone industry is also installing instruments to be used in connection with the pictures of the Derby and incidents of Derby Day. 4
