HAVRE DE GRACE NOTES - : HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 15. Among the club house visitors Saturday at Bowie was W. G. Pegram, of Johannesburg, South Africa. Mr. Pegram is one of the stewards of the South African Jockey Club. He is on his way to England to witness the running of the Derby and stopped over in Washington for a few days to take in the sport at Bowie and see a bit of American racing. J. Santos, who acquired Encamp and Columbus via the claiming route at Bowie, shipped this pair of platers to Porto Rico this morning, where they will take part in the racing to be given at the summer meeting at the Porto Rico Jockey Club. Harry Rites, who acts as superintendent of the Griffwood Farms, reports there are fifty brood mares, the property of various owners, at the farm. Many of them have already foaled; Quite a number were bred to Sedge-field last spring. General manager Edward Burke will, as usual, donate a 00 Tiffany split second watch to the jockey riding the greatest number of winners at the meeting. The latest additions to starter Miltons schooling list are Sans Terre, Sonny Fronk, Kosciusko, Cleve Pierce, Atlas, First Mission, Friar Cliff, Miss Canopy, Maurice, Maid of the Valley and Playabit. Redivius, the property of E. J. Holland, will be unsexed and turned out at Griffwood Farms for the summer. Frank Hayes, Waterburys popular mayor, has signed jockey Frank Dougherty to ride his horses during the balance of the Maryland season. Dougherty rode sixty-five winners last year. Since January 1 he has ridden twenty-three. During the Bqwie meeting 4,750 was deposited in the claiming box for the nineteen horses that were taken out of claiming races. On the opening day at Havre de Grace three horses were claimed, for a total of ?8,250. Rockslide, which was claimed by G. W. Foreman yesterday, won fourteen races when racing for Frank Hayes. It looks as if the horse has seen his best days, as he is troubled with a bad shoulder and very shaky underpinning. Many of the jockeys riding here are on the road these mornings in an effort to keep down to weight. Among those seen on the highway heavily clothed are II. Erickson, W. Curran, A. Robertson, J. Loyland, J. Eaby, H. Little, R. Russell, J. Shanks and G. Quackenbush. Two horses that started in the sixth race Monday changed hands via the claiming route. when Fair Bill was taken by Charles Farreil" for ,750. and Rockslide, by G. W. Foreman, for ,000.
