SURPRISE IN CHESAPEAKE STAKES Sweet Sentiment Triumphant in Havre de Graces Closing Attraction Michigan Boy Finishes Second, But Is Disqualified HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 2G. The closing day of the Havre de Grace spring meeting was a great one for the followers of the Seagram Stable. The Canadian sportsman sent two horses to the post during the afternoon, Solace and Sweet Sentiment. The former was returned a winner in the Shenandoah Purse, and Sweet Sentiment came back to make it a double when he won the hB10,000 Chesapeake Handicap. This was the afternoons feature. The race was marred by a bit Sof rough riding, and Michigan Boy, which finished seconjd, was disqualified for fouling Ned O. and Crazy Coot. The foul occurred at the sixteenth post. Michigan Boy had moved into second position and he swerved suddenly to the inside and put Ned O. and Crazy Coot against the fence. For a time it looked as if both horses would go down, but in some miraculous manner their riders kept them on their feet. When the start came Workman sent Crazy Coot to the front and in the turn led Sweet Sentiment by half a length. Michigan Boy was third. The Whitney racer led down the back stretch and at the half-mile pole had a lead of a length. Rounding the far turn McGinnis sent Sweet Sentiment up and he passed the Whitney colt at the three-furlong pole. Straightened out for the final run, Le Blanc sent Michigan Boy to make his move and the colt passed Crazy Coot. He made a desperate attempt to get Sweet Sentiment, but the latter held his opposition safe, although McGinnis went to a drive the last hundred yards. At the end Sweet Sentiment had a margin of a length and a quarter over Michigan Boy, which in turn beat Swinfield two lengths for the place. Eull Dress followed another half length away. Full Dress dropped out of contention in the early stages and, entering the home stretch, McCoy steered him to the outside. In the stretch run the Glenn Riddle racer closed with a great burst of speed. The stewards were prompt in disqualifying Michigan Boy and the changed placing made Sweet Sentiment first, Swinfield second and Full Dress third. Then came a ruling suspending jockey LeBlanc and referring his oase to the Maryland Racing Commission for further action. The value of the stake was 0,150. Havre de Grace got a good break in the weather after eleven disagreeable days and a record-breaking crowd turned out to witness the sport. It is doubtful if a greater number of people ever witnessed a race run over this track than were present this afternoon. The Whitney Stable withdrew Squab from the Pathfinder Purse, which left six to go. Two of them. Schooner and Glidelia, were coupled as the Rancocas Stable entry. A heavy play developed on this pair "and they went to the post at odds-on. Frank Taylor Continued on eleventh page. SWEET SENTIMENT SURPRISE Continued from first page. availed himself of AATorkmans services after Squab Avas withdrawn and it A-as Avell that he did, for Schooner just beat Just Believe by a neck after a long, hard stretch drive, in Avhich he Avas hard pressed at the end. Just Belie-e, Avhich has shoAvn keen speed at the Miami meeting, began like a quarter horse and Avas soon out in front, leading the others a length. She A-as running fast and the first quarter A-as clicked in :2215. Continuing on at this rapid pace. Just Believe was a length and a half in front straightened, out in the home stretch. The first half mile was run in :47. In the last hundred yards the leader began to shorten her stride. Schooner, Avhich Avas racing in second place from the start, answered when called on and, gradually Avear-ing Just Believe down, was up in the final strides. All Hail finished third, beaten two lengths for second place. This colt ran greenly and was all OAer the track. He closed in resolute fashion when put to a drive and it is only reasonable to suppose that he will show a better effort the next time out. The Seagram stable sent their Trojan horse, Solace, to the post for the first time this year in the running of the Shenandoah Purse. There was some question as to Avheth-er he was fit to go a mile and a sixteenth, but he demonstrated that he Avas a right good horse when he took the lead soon after the break, set his field a fast pace all the Avay and, at the end, Avon by a length and a half. At no time during the running did Solace appear to be fully extended. McGinnis took him in hand soon after getting a position and he never released him from restraint. Toki, Avhich has been finishing second in his recent races, finally managed to win a purse Avhen he beat a band of platers in the running of the third race. This was a claiming affair at six furlongs. Toki, ridden by the diminutiA-e J. Passero, outfooted his opposition from the break and, setting a rapid pace, was never passed.
