SURPRISE IN FEATURE Don Fernando Defeats Battle Ax at Exposition Park Makes Fastest Time of Meeting Meetingfor for Mile Rare Charm CharmWins Wins Third AURORA III May 14 Don Fernando a westernbred ridden by jockey Moran upset the calculations of the form players when he raced home an easy winner in the Grand Trunk Railway Handicap at Exposition Park today The race was run as the fifth and Battle Ax the favorite finished second with Playfellows Dream third The race was over the mile and a sixteenth distance distanceThe The winner which was ridden by jockey Moran had but 95 pounds on his back and Moran rode a good race He saved the colt in the early stages permitting First Mis ¬ sion to set the pace and when the half way mark was reached took after the leader Sprinting up fast he caught First Mission on the final turn and opening up a good lead finished three lengths before Battle Ax First Mission quit badly in the run home and was fourth fourthBattle Battle Ax and Jack Haskell the overnight favorites were the victims of poor racing luck The former was in several pockets while jockey Mulrooney was attempting to go through next to the inner rail and when the boy gave up trying and took to the outside it was too late and Battle Ax could not catch Don Fernando Jack Haskell was practically eliminated when he began slowly slowlyTJXPLK TJXPLK ASA T WEATHER WEATHEROverhead Overhead conditions were the worst of the meeting Rain threatened throughout the aft ¬ ernoon and occasionally came down in a light drizzle A cold win blew across the course and made outer wraps a necessity The track was fast and the fastest mile of the meeting was run in the feature race the horses going that distance in 138 138Enthusiastic Enthusiastic Edward which races for R L Rogers won the first race He was much the best and scored by a big margin Sailor Maid was the favorite and beat the others away from the barrier but the winner soon overtook her and at the stretch turn had a good advantage He was never threatened thereafter Honeyfish came from far back to be second while HuOn Time was third Sailor Maid quit badly and finished fourth fourthAtcasa Atcasa with jockey Ayraud in the saddle was an easy winner in the second She took command soon after the start and was joined by Roycrofter on the far turn but still clung to her advantage and shaking off her rival in the run home was several lengths in advance of the others at the end Perriehon one of the field horses got up in time to take second place from Igor The race which was over six furlongs attracted a limit field of twelve twelveDOUBLE DOUBLE 1OH AYRAUD AYRAUDJockey Jockey Ralph Ayraud who rode the winner ot the second race made it two in a row when he piloted Rare Charm to victory in the third The winner and Norias were coupled as the Paradise Stock Farm entry and while Norias showed but little Rare Charm domin ated the race at all stages The daughter of Thunderer was away quickly and securing a good lead in the last quarter led Miss Joan to the finish line by a length and a half Downpour which finished third showed a better effort than the chart would indicate He was slow to start and when Leyland seemed to lose control of him on the stretch turn he raced almost to the outside fence but came fast in the stretch and with better racing luck would probably have given the winner an argument The race was over five furlongs furlongsCalgary Calgary Kay which recently arrived from Pimlico with the string of B E Chapman faced an Aurora barrier for the first time this afternoon and came through with flying colors His victory came in the fourth race which attracted a band of sprinters and the son of Calgary led for the entire distance Jockey Keiser gave him his head in the early stages and he opened up a good lead which he held to the end Pink Blossom finishing with a rush got up in time to catch Tetra Glass and be second while the latter was third Peter Ruff was the favorite but after showing early speed quit badly in the stretch stretchCockrill Cockrill showing much improvement over his recent effort was an easy winner in the sixth race He was outrun to the stretch but caught the leaders when called on arid won by five lengths Red Spider which set the pace finished second and Richu was third Baked Apple Houseboy and Richu met with interference when Red Spider cut across in front of them going to the first turn
