ALCIBIADES TRIUMPHS Crack Filly Wins Lillies of the Valley Purse Dixie Lad Outstays Billy Champ Champin in Stirring Finish Churchill ChurchillDowns Downs Track Muddy LOUISVILLE Ky May 14 Alcibiades H P Headleys homebred daughter oC Supre nius and Regal Roman showed a return to winning form and furnished a mild surprise for another large crowd at Churchill Downs this afternoon when she easily accounted for the featured Lillies of the Valley Purse for threeyearold fillies and contested at six and onehalf furlongs At home in the muddy going the winner ably ridden by L Jones came away through the stretch to win by two lengths over Honey Locust the popular choice provided by the J N Camden stable Third fell to Under the Rose and Rich Widow led the five others othersBreaking Breaking fast the winner forced the pace cut out by Under The Rose under strong reserve to the stretch where she responded strongly and passing the early leader quickly opened up a safe lead and was not threat ¬ ened by Honey Locust The latter also close on the early pace offered a game but vain effort to keep pace with the winner as the latter forged around Under The Rose and while successful in disposing of the latter found the winners closing speed far too much for her herAt At the close of six and onehalf furlongs Honey Locust had a margin of a length over the faltering Under the Rose and Rich Widow which was forced to race wide for the entire distance followed little more than a length back The chief disappointment was Chelys which failed to figure prominently at any stage and trailed far back at the end endWEATHER WEATHER COOL COOLCool Cool cloudy weather was the order and while militating against improvement in the racing strip which received a severe drench ¬ ing the day before it failed to dampen the interest of enthusiasts and the attendance verged on Saturday proportions Good sport came out of the attractive program and public choices came in for more than aver ¬ age success successThe The veteran Scotland which races for J V Pons came through with another winning performance when he gamely outstayed Val dosta in the opening race The victor well ridden by L Jones had his work cut out wearing down Black Flyer and heading him within a short distance of the end of the six and onehalf furlongs just managed to keep in advance of the fast finishing Val dosta The latter was only a head back of the winner and had a halflength over Black Flyer which gave way slowly after dominating to the final eighth Black Fly ¬ ers defeat broke a string of victories ex ¬ tending through three races at the recent Lexington meeting and he held the post of favorite today todayWHITXEY WHITXEY VICTORY VICTORYThe The colors of H P Whitney again flashed in triumph when Zoom saddled by Mose Goldblatt carried them to an immensely pop ¬ ular victory over High Storm Governor Pratt and eleven others in the second race a split of the preceding one Kenneth Rus ¬ sell brought the son of Pennant and Tluth Law from behind the pace and gaining the lead after a difficult struggle he raced home a length in the van of the swift closing High Storm The latter included in the mutuel field came from far back with a rush through the final quarter to follow closest to the stoutly backed winner and earned sec ¬ ond place by one and onehalf lengths over Governor Pratt another which closed fast Tommy Tickle and Sky High the latter in front for more than a half mile and the former the leader entering the last eighth tired badly when the final drive came while Pagan Laddie which was expected to prove a contender was outpaced outpacedThe The third race or Floyds Fork Purse for maiden twoyearold colts and geldings pro ¬ vided Spanish Play which was making his first appearance with an opportunity to open his career with a victory Showing the way from the start of the four and onehalf fur ¬ longs he moved away from his opponents and won by four lengths from Eye White while Portcodine nosed out Greenwald for third On the strength of numerous good trials the winner was installed a pronounced favorite C Landolt had the mount on the winner winnerOne One of the closest finishes of the meeting resulted in the fourth race for plater three yearolds with Dixie Lad the starter of A B Letellier the winner by the narrowest of margins over Billy Champ Southland Pal accounting for third place Carl Meyer brought the winner from far back with a fine burst of speed but Billy Champ hung on stubbornly and it was only at the end that the winners nose showed in front Make Haste which set most of the pace and Southland Pal both tired badly when the real racing began and Chariot which came in for some support dropped out of it ap ¬ proaching the stretch
