BLACK MAJESTY BEST Coe Star Makes Auspicious 1930 Debut in Sansovino Handicap Lord Derby Guest of Honor at atBelmont Belmont Park Witnesses WitnessesThrilling Thrilling Finish NEW YORK N Y May 19 Lord Derby the distinguished English sportsman was the guest of honor today at Belmont Park and just back from Louisville and the running of the Kentucky Derby he took a lively interest in the racing of the Westchester Racing Association The chief attraction for the day was the Sansovino Handicap one mile named for the colt that won the Epsom Derby under Lord Derbys silks silksUnfortunately Unfortunately the day was cold and cheerless and the track was muddy from the rains of early morning That did not pre ¬ vent a surprisingly large crowd attending and the sport that had been furnislied for the occasion was first class classThe The Sansovino Handicap furnished a real thrill when W R Coes threeyearold Black Majesty making his first appearance of the year beat Kai Feng from the Rancocas Stable and third was the portion of Sweep Out a stablemate of the winner The dis ¬ appointment of the race was Distraction which seemed to be particularly suited by the going He ran one of his unaccountably dull races and was at no time a contender No time was lost at the barrier and Sweep Out a filly of extreme speed was rushed out to set the pace and she accomplished that magnificently when she ran the first quarter in 23 through the mud She got to the half in 4G and carried on for six furlongs in 110 Such a killing pace was calculated to keep her in the lead but it was Black Majesty that was following her and Kai Feng was in third place just show ¬ ing the way to Ironsides Before the stretch was reached it was evident that Distraction was to cut no figure in the race He was far back and Burke was utterly unable to rouse him to a better effort effortTurning Turning into the stretch Sweep Out began to show signs of tiring from the terrific pace but as she tired Black Majesty was ready to carry on and took the lead Kai Feng had profited by the pace of the Coe pair and in that last gruelling furlong was aining fast Knight went to a furious drive Continued on twentysecond page BLACK MAJESTY BEST Continued from first page on Black Majesty and he just kept the son of Black Toney going long enough to be winner by a nose Three lengths back the tired Sweep Out saved third but she was only a head before Ironsides he in turn beating Distraction by full eight lengths and the temperamental son of Chicle only beat one horse Kildare KildareThe The race was run in 138 which meant that after all the fast pace in the early stages the last quarter was run in 27 27The The opening race was a four and a lialf furlongs contest over the Widener course for maiden twoyearolds Helianthus car ¬ rying the silks of Gifford A Cochran won from Phillips P Randolphs Gay Pal and Bushman from the Foxcatcher Farm Stable beat C W Smiths Rubio for third The winner beginning well dominated the race and Gay Pal was quickly alongside with the pair well out before the others Sande had the mount on the Randolph colt and to the last sixteenth he was hanging on to the son of Sun Flag gallantly but near the end Kelsay roused his mount and he drew away to be an easy winner by four lengths Gay Pal almost as easily saved second place while a fight resulted for third when Bush ¬ man just lasted to beat the fastfinishing Rubio for that part of the purse purseThe The steeplechase of the day was a short course gallop for nonwinners of three races in 1929 and 1930 and G H Pete Bostwick the accomplished gentleman jockey brought Thomas Hitchcocks Actor home an easy winner over Friar McGee from the Brook meade Stable with A Ludlow Kramers Flower Rock beating the Greentree Stables Fair Enough for third Three came to grief when The Ace II unseated Tammaro at the second jump Omar Romar losing E Wolke at the seventh and Valorous a stablemate of Fair Enpugh fell at the ninth Fortunately all three of the riders escaped serious injury
