May 19 The York Plate Handicap one mile and seventy yards which attracted five starters resulted in a hollow victory for the K E Hitt Stables Sunvir at Woodbine Park today when he splashed his way to a fivelength victory over Mint Sauce from the Eastland Farm Stable with Black Diamond earning third when he led Fire Brigade and Black Cloud who finished in the order named namedThe The start was a fast one and Sunvir was first to show but in the sprint to the first turn he was outrun by both Mint Sauce and Black Diamond Slate wisely took his mount under slight restraint while Black Diamond and Mint Sauce were fighting stride for stride for the leadership Slates patience was rewarded as Mint Sauce subdued Black Diamond and when he was called on Sunvir responded gamely and in the last furlong raced into command and the end found him five lengths before Mint Sauce which re ¬ tained a like margin over Black Diamond with the others three lengths back and sep ¬ arated by a head headThe The Howe Stables Gold Brook son of Van cedor Gilt Brook added his name to the roster of winners of the Woodstock Plate at one mile and onesixteenth that was worth J3G10 when he took the measure of three others that sported silks This was the fortyfourth running of the race and second to the winner beaten by a neck was Sweet Sentiment bearing the black and yellow of the Seagram Stable Third fell to the j Niagara Stables Moonstruck when he beat Brother Rank from the H C Hatch barn by a length and onehalf for that portion of the purse purseFrom From a good start Sweet Sentiment rushed to the first turn and looked as if he would assume a good lead McGinnis went out from the rail in search of firmer footing Moonstruck was right alongside the Seagram starter and Brother Rank was in the van of the Howe color bearer Maiben astride Goldbrook moved over next to the inner rail and securing racing room was able to send his mount through to gain the lead as the back stretch was reached Goldbrook was kept company by Sweet Sentiment and through the back stretch the two easily led the remaining pair pairTJXDEK TJXDEK HARD DRIVE DRIVESweet Sweet Sentiment was driving hard by the time the stretch turn was reached and Gold brook was going gamely while those in the rear were unable to get into contention In the stretch Maiben came out into the middle of the course when seemingly well clear but in the late stages McGinnis shifted to the inside with Sweet Sentiment and right at the end Maiben was forced to urge the winner to hold his lead leadThe The Rutland Plate a dash of four and a half furlongs for twoyearolds that was the initial offering of the day furnished Vice from the R E Perry stable his first oppor ¬ tunity to get into the charmed circle when he accounted for the short sprint in rather easy fashion to take the measure of the seven others that opposed her Three lengths behind the winner to earn second by a slight margin over the lukewarm choice Justone came Lovey Girl while Captive was not far back of the latter pair to lead the others othersVice Vice showed excellent ability in the slip ¬ pery underfootirig and displacing Captive soon after the start drew clear when midway of the home stretch and thereafter increased her lead until she crossed the winning mark with a three lengths advantage Lovey Girl managed to hold on resolutely to resist Just one while the latter was forced to a terrific drive to get a nose verdict over Captive for third Aulularia was at a complete loss in the footing and dropped back badly after the first eighth eighthAnother Another steeplechase triumph was scored by a member of the Eastland Farms Stable when Vocalian proved much the best of the four starters that were brought into action for the trying two miles of the Helter Skelter Steeplechase the second race of the day Vocalian was installed a prohibitive choice and vindicated the publics judgment when he galloped to an easy victory over Huon Joy from the John Bosley barn to triumph by fifteen lengths Vocalian and Huon Joy were the only two starters to remain upright during the race raceFITZrATJUCKS FITZrATJUCKS PLUCK PLUCKOrions Orions Sword after losing his rider at the seventh jump was pluckily remounted by Fitzpatrick when he saw Winoya fall at the twelfth jump and sending his mount over the remainder of the route was in the re ¬ quired limit of time to receive third money Winoya had a heavy fall and for a moment was knocked out and no effort was made to remount remountTwelve Twelve homebreds furnished the contest in the third race and this saw Killing from the Seagram Stable upholding her high rating with the players when she was rather an easy winner by a margin of two lengths Tipsy was the one to chase the winner home while third was awarded to Marie Gaiety when she outstayed Optical in a hard drive There was a delay of several minutes in this due chiefly to Kauri lunging through the barrier and unseating M Sullpvey who suf ¬ fered painful injuries that forced a substitu ¬ tion of riders Fourteen minutes elapsed and with the start the field was away in good alignment with Sabana and Optical showing the way Kitling was away fast and Mc ¬ Ginnis did not attempt to go along with the leaders Reaching the turn Kitling moved up and on reaching the final eighth post Jiad displaced the leading pair to come away to win without much effort effortMarlboro Marlboro from the William Wick stable turned in an impressive effort to account for the Iroquois Plate which was the fifth offering when he scored an easy victory without being extended during the later stages of the race He led home R Pend ings Gnome Boy by a maigin of five lengths Billycock was third when he easily outstayed T Coffeys Rejuvenation RejuvenationMarlboro Marlboro had the most speed away from the barrier and going to the first turn was joined by Gnome Boy while Rejuvenation was not far back of the pair Robertson was allowing Marlboro to set a fast pace but for the first six furlongs was unable to do away with Gnome Boy which was holding on gamely Rejuvenation displaced Billycock in third place midway on the back stretch but on reaching the far turn dropped back beaten At this stage Marlboro was shaken up and drawing away steadily when Gnome Boy was unable to match his speed sped past the winning mark under restraint
