PeteeWrack Wins Suburban SPECTACULAR CONTEST Neck Separates Son of Wrack and Curate at End Sun Edwin Triumphs in Memorial MemorialDay Day Handicap Large Crowi CrowiAttracted Attracted to Belmont Park NEW YORK N T May 30 John R Mac pmbers PeteeWrack under a good ride by Earl Sande added his name to the winning roster of the old Suburban Handicap at Bel ¬ mont Park in the big feature of a Memorial Day program It was a triumph that called for real riding skill and at the end of the gruelling mile and a quarter the son of Wrack was winner by a neck from Joseph E Wideners Curate which in turn only beat the Wheatley Stables Distraction by a head Back of these followed The Nut and Sortie with Minotaur the only other starter beaten off badly badlyElaborate Elaborate preparations were made for the holiday crowd and even thouh the weather was so disagreeable the crowd was a big one In the Turf and Field Club before the races there were various luncheon parties and many were entertained under a huge tent that had been put up for the occasion These guests sat about the tables wearing wraps but they had braved the weather and they went through with the day from the early luncheon to the last of the seven races racesThe The low temperature and the drizzles of rain kept many away and still the crowd was one of the largest of the season Had the weather been seasonable it is safe to say that a new attendance record would have been established establishedTTXCOMF TTXCOMF OUT ABLY COLD COLDIn In midafternoon the sun broke through the clouds and conditions were a bit more pleasant but right through the day it was uncomfortably cold for out of door sport sportIt It was a brilliant renewal of a notable race and one of the greatest crowds that ever assembled at Belmont Park was thrilled by the contest The old prize carried a net value of 11850 to the winner winnerThere There was little delay at the post in the Suburban Handicap and as the barrier went up it was Sortie that first showed the way but they were all closely bunched and Petee Wrack which had the inside position was fifth of the six to be away from the barrier There was ample room next to the rail and Sande quickly moved the son of Wrack into a contending position Sortie never famed for early speed soon surrendered the lead to Distraction and The Nut was running alongside the son of Chicle Curate was right there and then came PeteeWrack going faster than any of the contestants contestantsIt It was approaching the turn out of the back stretch after the long straight run that Sande moved on PeteeWrack and quickly found his way through on the inside Once showing the way he took a firm hold of his mount and from that stage never surrendered his lead leadCurate Curate was racing alongside and The Nut followed almost at the heels of the Widener colt Sortie had dropped baclf as had Dis ¬ traction Turning into the stretch Sande went a bit wide in search of the best going and in doing so Curate was carried out a bit while The Nut saved ground and Dis ¬ traction also came through on the inside both of them saving considerable ground groundCurate Curate was furnishing plenty of contention and inside the final furlong Sande swung his whip once on the winner This roused the son of Wrack and from there to the finish Sande depended on a hand ride Curate was hanging on with rare gameness but he could draw no closer to the Macomber horse and they swept past the line with Petee Wrack still a neck to the good goodJACK JACK HIGH SCRATCHED SCRATCHEDIn In the meantime Distraction and The Nut were fighting along furliously on the inside and right at the end The Nut tired to have Distraction come on until he was only a head back of Curate and a length and a half before the invader from the Middle West Sortie was another head back while Minotaur plainly did not belong and was ten lengths back There was disappointment when the heavy condition of the going brought the withdrawal of Jack High winner of the Metropolitan Handicap and that same condi ¬ tion was much to the liking of the winner winnerThe The big crowd had a thrill in the opening race that brought out a field of six It saw Mrs C S Bennetts Flying Max under a good Continued on twentysecond page SPECTACULAR CONTEST Continued from first page ride by Sonny Workman winner by a nose over Li II Howes Sepoy rilden by Laverne Fator Three lengths back of these Mrs John Hertz Fair Ball was an easy third be ¬ fore Bannerette from the Sage Stable The start was a good one with Bannerette first to show out of the bunch but she soon gave way to Imperial Air which was sent along by Robertson at a good pace but under slight restraint Sepoy was taken back from the leaders by Fator and Workman followed along back of him with Flying Max Going to the stretch turn Imperial Air showed some signs of tiring and there Bannerette moved up slightly while Fair Ball chal ¬ lenged on the outside Fator at the same time moved up with Sepoy but he chose the outside while Workman took the in ¬ side with Flyin Max In the final eighth it narrowed to a battle between this pair and Sepoy was gaining with every stride but the ground saved by Flying Max as he swung into the stretch was an advantage and he just lasted to be winner by a nose i Fair Ball outstayed the others with no trouble while Imperial Air had quit badly badlyThe The Potomac Steeplechase brought three falls and resulted in a stirring finish when Bold Knight from the Greentree Stable un ¬ der a long drive by McGovern got up to take the measure of Rooney from the Brook meade Stable with R B Strassburgers The Ace II a distant third thirdThose Those who came to grief were Crows Nest which was a contender to the last jump and racing third when he went to his knees and unseated Pinon Flying Sweep which un ¬ seated Marsters at the ninth jump and Cer vena Krev which went down at the second jump Fortunately all of the riders escaped serious hurts Crows Nest was the one to dash to the front at the fall of the flag but Rooney soon had him headed and once in front the Brookmeade fencer was showing the way until the last few yards where he finally succumbed to the rush of Bold Knight KnightMcGovern McGovern kept Bold Knight closer to the leader than he was raced in his previous bad race and he finished with determination in the final half mile of the twomile journey Tt was the second turn of the field and while Qrows Nest was racing second to Rooney that McGovern shook up Bold Knight and he readily disposed of the son of Man o War to go into second place In the run through the front field he continued to gain on Rooney but it took a long hard drive to land him the winner by a length and a half halfFor For the first of the two Memorial Day handicaps over the seven furlongs distance track conditions brought scratches that left only five to parade to the post The stirring finishes continued in this when Sun Edwin from the Arden Farms Stable just nosed out Mrs 1C 13 Hitts Hot Toddy with Sweep Out from W R Coes string a close third thirdSweep Sweep Out was the one to force the pace and Robertson saved ground with her along the rail all the way McAtee had Sun Edwin going along nicely back of her and in the early stages Eddie Ahearn was close up while Hot Toddy followed followedIt It was going to the stretch turn that Mc ¬ Atee made his first move with Sun Edwin but when Robertson roused Sweep Out she fought along so gamely that he had to call on the son of Sun Briar vigorously to have him lead the filly In the meantime Hot Toddy had raced wide and was gaining with a great rush on the outside It was a rush that al ¬ most brought victory for when McAtee found he had Sweep Out beaten he ceased his urg ¬ ing of Sun Edwin Fortunately he realized the danger from Hot Toddy in the last few Strides and only saved the purse by a matter
