ALTO WINNER IN OHIO Defeats Ironsides in Thistle Down Holiday Feature Clarence Le Bus Scores Exciting Victory in Last Strides General Jackson Wins CLEVELAND Ohio May 30 Closing with a well timed rush through the stretch Mrs J W Smiths Alto got up in the last few yards to capture the Decoration Day 2500 handicap sixth and feature number at Thistle Down Park this afternoon C B Irwins Ironsides raced to the place Rain or Shine tarrying the colors of R J Moore and cou ¬ pled with Clearance was third thirdIronsides Ironsides took command early but was dis ¬ placed from the leadership by Rain or Shine racing tip the back stretch with Break of Dawn in third position and Alto last of all Rounding the far turn Alto made his move and wearing down the leaders through the final furlong just headed Ironsides in the last few strides Rain or Shine weakened near the end after having been displaced from the leadership by Ironsides when well into the stretch Break of Dawn tired and the others were never serious factors factorsAutumnlike Autumnlike weather prevailed and the sky was heavily clouded throughout the after ¬ noon A cold wind added to the discomfort of the holiday gathering which despite the uninviting conditions was the largest that has attended the Thistle Down course in years The club house was particularly well patronized by Cleveland society but winter wearing apparel and furs predominated The track proper improved wonderfully following yesterdays shower showerIt It was only after displaying a brilliant burst of speed coming from the rear and on the outside of his opposition during the last furlong that Sinon got to the front and even Continued on twentysecond page ALTO WINNER I OHIO Continued from first page tualiy annexed the opener going away His victory came as a surprise as he was little fancied After racing Jack Rankins and Peralta into defeat Captain J S had enough in reserve to save second from the fastfin ¬ ishing Sheriff Seth SethSeths Seths Companion and Royal Bells alter ¬ nated in the lead to the stretch in the second number but Dark Sabre steadily im ¬ proved her position and was not to be denied She closed with good courage on the outside in the last sixteenth to head Seths Com ¬ panion in a thrilling finish which marked the first success at this course for W S Kil ¬ mer Seths Companion was a handy second with Royal Bells a tiring third thirdTaking Taking command in the first quarter Mrs Foster carried the Worthington colors to another victory in the third race She led by a safe margin all through the stretch and won with something in reserve Paquette and Miss Peggy provided the contention throughout but Miss Peggy had the most in reserve for the final test and secured the place honors rather handily handilyClosing Closing a tremendous gap from last posi ¬ tion during the last half mile of the fourth event Ed Moores Clarence Le Bus gave his supporters a real thrill by overhauling the leaders in the stretch and eventually won going away and rather handily In the final drive for the place Bavelle Fronk outlasted Marion Payne after both had raced forwardly throughout Noble Charge the pacemaker tired badly in the stretch run runC C B Irwins General Jackson earned the verdict by a narrow margin after a hard stretch drive in the fifth event Coming from the rear but in game fashion he headed Michael Monahan the pacemaker in the last few yards Gallardo was a keen factor all the last half mile and finished a creditable third Justa Pal raced forwardly to the stretch and then weakened
