BALLYFERIS IN LIMELIGHT Colts Chances in Epsom Derby Subject of Much Discussion AmericanBred The Scout II Reported in Fine FineCondition Condition Diollte Still Remains RemainsDecided Decided Favorite SPECIAL CABLEGRAM CABLEGRAMLONDON LONDON England May 30 Ballyferis the bay colt by Apron Gilford which is the candidate of Major D Dixon for the Epsom Derby next Wednesday is the subject of considerable interest and speculation in turf circles here In some quarters he is held the equal of William Barnetts Trigo which won the great classic last year to the great glee of Irish enthusiasts and the con ¬ sternation of all others His workout at Newmarket this morning did not impress others favorably favorablyJockey Jockey Joe Canty who has always piloted Ballyferis in his races came from Ireland especially to ride the colt in his gallop Traveling at a good pace Ballyferis ran well for one mile and then tired As he slackened pace he gave the impression that he is not game He gave no indication of ill effects from his slight injury and his stable connections are reported to be satisfied with his condition and confident that he will win the Derby His price in the future bet ¬ ting lengthened slightly being now 100 to 8 a change from 100 to 9 9As As a twoyearold Ballyferis did all his racing in Ireland Starting five times he never was unplaced He won four races and in the other finished second losing to Sol De Terre a colt which he decisively defeated three times Ballyferis won bis first start he Leopardstown Produce Stakes five fur ¬ longs under 123 pounds He next won the Irish Breeders Produce Stakes five furlongs carrying 136 pounds arid beating Sol De Terre for the first time He then was beaten by Sol De Terre in the Baldoyle Foal Plate five furlongs Ballyferis carried 136 pounds conceding nineteen pounds to his conqueror Ballyferis won his next two starts at the Curragh and Sol De Terre trailed him home in botn The victories were scored in the Angeliey Stakes 122 pounds and the National Produce Stakes 138 pounds the distance of each event being six furlongs and sixty three yards yardsWith With Joe Childs up The Scout II the Americanbred colt owned by William WooH wnnl vicechairman of the New York Jockey Club galloped the full Derby distance He displayed fine stamina Jockey J Dines who is attached to the stable of Captain C BoydRpchfort trainer of The Scout II shares Childs view that the colt will be placed placedThere There were many inquiries today for Lord Woolavingtons Parenthesis by SonInLaw out of Bracket this colt is bred to stay He ran an excellent race at one mile and a quarter this month finishing second His price today was 25 to 1 decreasing from 33 to 1 1Sir Sir Hugo Hirsts Diolite cantered five fur ¬ longs today He went the full Derby dis ¬ tance yesterday He is a firmer favorite at 3 to 1 He previously was held at 4 to 1 The prices on several other candidates have also shortened Captain J Fieldens Cartello is now marked a doubtful starter A son of Prince Gallahad Cartona he is one of the outsiders Rustom Pasha is now 6 to 1 Silver Flare 100 to 9 Trews 100 to 8 Blen ¬ heim 100 to 6 Caerleon Iliad Noble Star and The Scout II 20 to 1 and Parenthesis 25 to 1
