BACK LOG IN FRONT Bashford Manor Stakes Falls to Son of Bunting Don Leon Second and La Salle SalleThird Third Great Holiday Crowd Crowdat at Churchill Downs LOUISVILLE Ky May 30 The twenty ninth running of the Bashford Manor Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings the feature of the excellent program resulted in a shocking surprise for many of todays great throng at Churchill Downs when Gallaher Combs Back Log R W Collins Don Leon and the Valley Lake Stables La Salle sprinted to the finish first second and third as named and slightly in advance of the highly regarded Insco which races for Griffin Watkins Eleven others completed the field which raced over five furlongs furlongsBack Back Log ridden by Herb Fisher won in a thrilling nose finish with Don Leon and the latter had but a half length over La Salle A length separated the latter from Insco which jockey Lee Hardy had behind the leaders all through the stretch Hardys exhibition occasioned adverse criticism Back Log under an impost of 122 pounds ran the distance in 100 and his victorious effort brought a purse of 7 2CO to his popular Ken ¬ tucky owners One thousand dollars went to second 500 to third and Insco saved nom ¬ ination and starting fees feesFrom From a good start most of the field raced to the turn in a bad jam with Insco and Harry Frank his stable companion having none the best of the luck Don Leon also was a sufferer and when the field spread on the turn Back Log raced away in the lead followed by Bill Morris Black Comet Insco and Don Leon followed in the run around the turn and as Back Log drew away from Bill Morris entering the stretch Insco moved into third place While negotiating the turn La Salle lost much ground but he made his way forward in game fashion and maintaining fine displaced Insco which was in close quarters With each stride La Salle drew nearer the leaders and in the final sixteenth surprised by main ¬ taining great speed and went on to the er 3 in the blanket finish with the more success ¬ ful pair pairZoom Zoom from the H P Whitney stable ran as if he outclassed the lowly platers that opposed him over six and a half furlongs in the first race He drew away in the stretch to win in a canter as Betty Ann lasted for second place in a nose finish with Holl Em Down Eleven others were included in the big field and the race brought an accident in which Widely Known ridden by C Lay dolt fell Avhen in close quarters approaching the stretch Landolt escaped with a shaking up and the horse suffered cuts about tho head and mouth mouthLuck Luck aided Outpost R S Clarks represen ¬ tative for the Springfield Purse for maiden threeyearolds and after being installed fa ¬ vorite he got away with honors by a head over Vermiculite which led the illfated Abeth by a Abeth and Lazy Susan were working their way up and the former as the result of earlier inter ¬ ference could not gain on the leaders in the late stages but this did not take from her good performance
