of Sir Gallahad III Uncles Lassie earned the right to be classed as one of the best twoyearold fillies of the year by carrying top weight of 122 pounds and winning the Debutante Stakes one of the twoyearold features of the Washington Park meeting She led Issaquena to the fin ¬ ish by a length and a half while Rare Charm stablemate of the latter finished third Over Shady was fourth fourthThe The winner which races in the colors of H P Gardner was ridden by jockey Clar ¬ ence McCrossen and there was no doubt as to her superiority She was much the best and beginning in front was never in danger of losing the leadership Fortunate in the draw for post position she raced away from the barrier a handy distance in advance of the others and shaking off Rare Charm and Helen Virginia which challenged in the early stages held Issaquena safe with but little effort in the final tlrive tlriveThe The Paradise Stock Farm entry which fin ¬ ished second and third also showed good form Rare Charm displayed fine sprint ¬ ing qualities while Issaquena demonstrated that she could go a route by coming fast in the stretch stretchJOCKEY JOCKEY SIUIOPSHIRE INJURED INJUREDThe The race was marred somewhat by an accident in which jockey Elmo Shropshire was the sufferer The lad was astride Miss Efectra and when that animal stumbled in the first quarter he was thrown heavily to the ground He was picked up and taken to the track hospital where the extent of his injuries will be determined determinedIt It was the fourth running of the Debutante Stakes and the race was worth 6970 to the owner of Betty Derr The filly ran the five and onehalf furlongs distance in 1 07 07It It was a record breaking crowd that at ¬ tended the holiday program at the Home wood course Despite the chill in the air the grand stand boxes and grand stand seats w re packed throughout the afternoon and it was next to impossible to secure a vantage point in that structure as the races were be ¬ ing run The spacious promenade in front of the stand and the mutuel department filled to almost capacity many times during the day while the club house lawn presented ascene of gaiety and color colorThe The official number of paid admissions was 30000 and it is estimated that over 35000 wit ¬ nessed the races Twentyfive thousand pro ¬ grams were sold during the day and as the supply was limited to that number many late comers were noticed clamoring for cards More motor cars entered the course than ever before The management made provision for the overflow of machines by opening parking space close to the back stretch and erecting a gate and turnstyles through which the patrons could enter with ¬ out coming to the front gate to purchase ad ¬ mission tickets Fourteen special trains were run over the Illinois Central and all were packed to the doors doorsSPECULATION SPECULATION HEAVY HEAVYIt It was announced early in the afternoon that the play in mutuel department for the first two races exceeded that of last year by over 525000 and it was thought that the in ¬ crease would amount to well over 100000 before the day was ended The track was at its best and though the air was rather chilly the warm rays of the sun tempered the coolness to some extent and those who basked in the glare found conditions not un ¬ pleasant pleasantA A field of eight twoyearolds five of which were facing the barrier for the first time sought honors in the second race and young ¬ sters making their first appearance ran one two three Dandy Dan owned by the Valley Lake Stable was the winner He defeated J Marschs Homer L by over two lengths while the Rancocas Stables Charmer was third Continued on twentysecond page IMMENSE ATTENDANCE Continued from first page Ixrsidy Dan which is by Westy Hogan Dress Up showed a good effort but it is probable that Homer L a Sun Flag colt was best Homer L showed great early speed and opened up a long lead soon after the start but his chances for victory were ruined when he raced wide on the stretch turn and Dandy Dan stayed close to the rail Homer L continued gamely when straightened out however and will likely develop into a use ¬ ful racer Word of his speed had reached the ears of the fans before his race today and he was made favorite favoriteShift Shift proved to be a repeater when he won the opening race in the easiest sort of man ¬ ner Ridden by jockey Keiser he was ap ¬ parently much the best and opened up a long lead in the stretch to score by seven lengths Big Chief finished second and Royal Manager made up much ground to be third Florida Gold was the favorite but used up much energy by his bad actions at the barrier and tired badly after racing a good three quarters He finished last The race was at one mile mileThe The Rancocas Stable supplied their first winner of the meeting when Leucite captured the third race in hollow fashion The win ¬ ner which was favorite was rushed to the front by jockey Ayraud soon after the start and racing many lengths in advance of the others all the way won by eight lengths Replevin an outsider was second and Fran ¬ ces Milward though far back in the early stages got up in time to be third Patricia Ann one of the favorites suffered by being away poorly and quit badly after racing into second place in the stretch stretchReichert Reichert Brothers fast sprinter My Dandy scored one of the most popular victories of the day when he defeated a small but fleet band of sprinters in the Decoration Handicap the race which preceded the Debu ¬ tante Stakes Backed to oddson by his legion of supporters the consistent animal was given a good ride by jockey Garrity and beat Zacaweista by a neck Flat Iron was third while Tombereau and Cayuga were unplaced unplacedMany Many of the winners backers showed anxiety when My Dandy failed to outrun the others in the early stages and a few were inclined to give up hope when their favorite dropped four lengths back of the pacemakers approaching the stretch turn but jockey Garrity realized his mounts worth and tak ¬ ing him to the extreme outside of the others on the final turn wore them down and was a handy winner The race was over six furlongs
