KENTUCKY DERBY PRELIMINARY ♦ All of Leading Western Candidates Scheduled to Meet Today in Preparation Purse at Churchill Downs • LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 7. — All of the leading western candidates for the Kentucky Derby are among the ten three-year-olds scheduled to meet in the Preparation Purse at one mile, feature of tomorrows Churchill Downs program, and one of the most important and attractive Derby preliminaries in several years. The result of the race will have a direct bearing upon the Derby line up, and those failing in the Preparation may be dropped from further consideration as Derby prospects. Although the track was heavy today, clearing skies and warmer weather offered promise of great imnrovement bv tomorrow afternoon, when those in charee of the racine 5 strip hope to have it in good condition. With firm footing prevailing, all of the entered are expected to start and a great contest is in prospect. Pittsburgher, winner of two of his three starts this year, and present western favorite, gets in with a considerable pull in the weights over Spanish Play, Insco, Sweep All, Boys Howdy and Don Leon, all stakes winners. Insco will carry the top weight of 117 pounds, while Spanish Play, Sweep All, Boys Howdy and Don Leon are to carry 115 pounds each and Pittsburgher, Ilium, Bar Hunter and Prince DAmour 111 pounds each. Barometer, the lone non-winner among the ten colts, will have up 107 pounds. Trainer H. J. Thompson breezed Bar Hunter and Barometer a half in :51 and Lloyd Gentry sent Boys Howdy a like distance in :51% over the heavy Downs track this morning. At Douglas Park, where the going was slow. Prince DAmour went three-eighths in :38 breezing. The following are those named to contend for the Preparation Purse, with post positions, weights and riders: PP. Horse. Wt.
