SWEEP ALL RETIRED FOR CURRENT YEAR | ♦ , Western Hope for American Derby Badly Injured in Tuesdays Race . • — — Withdrawal of Fisher Colt Leaves Fourteen Probable i Starters, Two of Which Are Doubtful in Saturdays 0,000 Feature » HOMEWOOD, 111., June 17.— The racing of Sweep All during the current year came to a tragic close and the western forces for the 0,000 added American Derby, to be run Saturday at Washington Park lost an outstanding contestant when that sturdy son of Sweep was found to have suffered a mild rupture of the left fore middle tendon in the , Derby Trial yesterday. Additionally, the crack colt, which carried Charles T. Fishers i Dixiana colors in second place in the Kentucky Derby, received in the Trial, which was to have been his final public appearance before the American Derby, several cuts about the right hind pastern. These lacerations, not serious enough to have prevented his go- c c ®ing to the Derby post, were inflicted by Pittsburgher, when the Shady Brook Farm three-year-old piled into the former as the : field swung around the club house turn. Much filling developed about the "bow" during the night and only the great game-ness which assisted him in racing his way to the top among the western three-year-olds permitted his hobbling about his stall today. Trainer Clyde Van Dusen, who brought the popular colt into the greatest form of his career for the Kentucky Derby and saddled him for three winning performances since that Churchill Downs race, decided against any attempt to return his star to racing condition this year. He will be shipped from Washington Park to his owners Dixiana farm in Kentucky next Sunday night. Following the American Derby, Sweep All was to have started in the Latonia Derby and Arlington Classic before receiving a rest prior to preparation for a number of important fall engagements. Fortunately all of todays developments along the American Derby front did not have a dark aspect and the brightest of events was the announcement by trainer Tommy Roderick that Sun Meadow, K. E. Hitts great son of Sun Briar, which defeated Jamestown to finish second to Twenty Grand in the Belmont Stakes at Belmont last Saturday, is to fill his engagement in Saturdays race. Sun Meadow, now at Arlington Park, shipped from Belmont Park in fine fashion. "Tommy" Rodrock has arranged to van him to Washington Park Thursday morning. Not unlikely he will have his final Derby preparation late Thursday morning or between races the same day. Nothing more than a Continued on twenty-second page. j ! A O. Bostwlcks Mate asserted his readiness to bid for Dotty honors in the form of an impressive trial over the Homcwood course Owner trainer Post wick closed the ambit uuis training of his sterling son of Prince Pal with a briskly done mile, following which the Preakness winner galloped out an add! tional furlong. Mate appears capable of great performance and those about the Bostwiek camp look for him to DOOM through with the outstanding effort of his career in Saturdays race. Aside from the loss of a tooth, Pitts burgher, which hail a narrow escape from a fall when he struck Sweep Alls heel, the Theodore E. Mueller colt was none the worse after Tuesdays race. Trainer James Moody is of the opinion that the son of In Me moriani will prove a formidable factor, if not the winner Saturday. Oswego. Spanish Play, Ladder anil Knights Call, others so badly knocked about by Morpheus during the running of the Trial that they were unable to show to best advantage, also escaped the rough expert ences uninjured. Joey Bibb, "dark horse" of the Derby field, is scheduled to engage a number of the lead ing older handicap racers in the Apron Strings Purse, seven furlong feature of Thursdays program, as his final public showing before the Derby. C. C. Van Meter, owner and trainer of the son of Chatterton, will only withdraw him from the big field for Saturdays race if he fails to race up to expectations tomorrow. As a result of his winning the "Trial." the Derby stock of H. C. Hatchs Boys Howdy, which lost fourth place in the Kentucky Derby to Spanish Play by a short margin, soared and the son of Bubbling Over wdl he one of the choices. Morpheus, the San Mateo Stock Farms Dozer gelding, moved into the Derby field when he raced Boys Howdy to a nos5 in Tuesdays race and only an ad verse track can deprive him of a chance at the prize. Trainer Edward Haughton reported Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Lightning Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby, in fine condition following his trial Tuesday morning, and Kurtsinger, who rode the Wrack gelding to victory in that important winter race and piloted Twenty rand in his Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes victories, may be here to ride the Whitney three -y» .11 old.
