NIM THE NYMPH SCORES Club House Is Unplaced After Slow Start at Jefferson Park. Nell Outsider Captures Third Race Weather Clears Track Improves Rapidly. EW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 31. Although lity was lacking in todays program at ferson Park, the racing over a slow, but idly drying-out track and under excel-; weather conditions was interesting and ductive of several surprises. Rain last lit was followed by fine drying weather i the mudd track that greeted horsemen laybreak so rapidly improved as the day :e on that there is every prospect of a i course for the running of tomorrows active New Years card, odays surprises included the upset vic-i of the Fall City Stables Nim the nph in the Pass Christian Claiming se, which held the position of honor on typical off-day program and for which ever-erratic Club House ruled choice, i latter refused to break with his com-iyf an old habit with the Meridian geld-, and was practically without chance in he did elect to go after his rivals, den by Gilbert Elston, who again carried a big share of the riding honors, Nim Nymph led from the close of the opening : of the six furlongs and won easily, h Hippias second and Miss Onine third. GRAND PRINCE DISAPPOINTS, fter moving into the lead, the winner was owed rather closely by Miss Onine to the itch where the latter found the pace too : and dropped back as Hippias entered runner-up position. Swerving sharply to inside after reaching the last eighth, ipias sacrificed some of his chances and, !,rjory for the weaving, might have given the ner a stronger argument. As it was, dropped the race by a length and one-C and at the end led the retiring Miss ne by four lengths. Grand Prince, sec-. choice, stage. failed to prove formidable at Running over a slow track, the winner the distance in 1:16. She had up 107 nds ad the victory was her second of meeting. The pleasant weather resulted the usual number of regulars turning he morning mud brought so many with-wals from the sixth race that it was lared off and the original third, sup-ated by the emergency or substitute race, arranged overnight, moved back to sixth ition on the card. tizzy, popular choice, opened the racing h a Valley Lake Stable triumph when she ried the colors of that stable to victory the introductory race. Seven two-year-3 opposed the daughter of Lucky Hour L Gay Prince raced to second place, with in third. Although Must Hurry was seen :he early lead, the winner was easily the t and when called upon, quickly moved command, following which she came on win with something in reserve and by ee lengths over Gay Prince, which out-ed Penn by a half length. Faltering ir reaching the last three-eighths, Must rry retired to fourth place, a half dozen jths back of Penn. DISTRESS SIGNAL SURPRISES, ommy Root saddled the winner of the and race, which engaged eleven three-r-olds at three-quarters. It vas R. lies Distress Signal, which graduated lier in the meeting. Under a strong and 1-judged ride, Distress Signal got away h. the victory, which occasioned mild sur-e, by a short length over Beige, while AJiaye B choice, drove to the finish in third place. The race was attended by an accident, In which J, Neel vas unseated from Dick Chevely when the Lone Star Stable colt stumbled at the stretch turn. Dick Chevely was racing well and held third position when he hobbled. Neel sprained a vrist in the fall. With the original third race moved back to sixth place on the card, the substitute affair offered as the third brought twelve more of the cheaper three-year-olds into contest at six furlongs. The rdfce resulted in a big surprise when R, OConnors Marjory Nell, making her first start of the winter, was returned the winner. Under a hustling, yet somewhat rough ride by J, Sylvester, she won easily, with Gallopette second and Forget Not third. The latter L Continued on twenty-tMrd page,. Holding on resolutely, Gallopette outstayed Forget Not for second place, but failed to threaten the winner. Polylith, second choice to Forget Not, quit badly after showing speed for a half mile. Sweep Past, strong third choice, was never a factor. Those who backed the successful daughter of Phalaros were rewarded with 7.20 for each straight ticket. With Donna Dear, favorite, a victim of a Weird ride by A. Pendergrass, the Lone Star Stables Lazy Mary had no real difficulty accounting for the mile Studio Club Claiming Purse, fourth on the program. Largely as a result of Pendergrass election to direct her over a course near the outer fence for most of the trip and permit her to swerve repeatedly in the closing quarter, the favorite was never prominent and the winner, Miss Upset and Southland Lad made all the running. When nearing the closing quarter Lazy Mary came around Miss Upset to the lead, which she retained thereafter, while Southland Lad, although tiring In the stretch run, had third place all to himself. The clever Elston rode his third winner when he piloted Traumel, favorite, to a decisive victory over Agnes Sorel, Miss Mac and four other fillies and mares in the sixth race. The distance was on$ mile and a sixteenth and Elston had the winner in front throughout. Agnes Sorel was the runner-up and Miss Mac was in third place at every stage. Jockey H. Zucchini, badly injured when thrown by one of the F. P. Letellier yearlings at the Fair Grounds three weeks ago, has been released from the hospital.
