JEFFERSONS NEW YEAR CARD Wotan Slated to Carry Top Weight in Feature Handicap. Five of Seven Races on Shrewsbury Program Scheduled Over One Mile or More. NEW ORLEANS, La., Dec. 31. The new year of 1932 will open with a brilliant program for local and visiting racing enthusiasts at Jefferson Park here tomorrow. A renewal of the ,000 New Years Handicap, formerly run at the Fair Grounds, is the feature event and, with twelve of the twenty-two eligibles likely to participate in the one mile and a sixteenth race, the holiday patrons are assured one of the outstanding contests of the season. Some rain fell last night, but sunshine and a high wind was whipping the course into good condition today and, with a continuation of such favorable weather, the holiday racing may be over the driest and firmest track in several weeks. With C. V. Whitneys Bargello not entered Edward Haughtons Wotan will carry the top weight of 116 pounds. This winner of the Thanksgiving and Green Wave Handicaps will find the impost and company he is asked to meet providing the hardest test of his career, but, coupled in the betting with the shifty Prose and Poetry, another double winner under the Haughton colors during the meeting, may rule favorite.
