KENTUCKY DERBY PROSPECTS . Jefferson Derby and Other Winter Stakes Proving Ground. 1 Another Black Gold, Bagenbaggage, Spanish Play or Boot to Boot May Be Developed. 1 LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 6. What the winter three-year-old stakes will develop in the way of Kentucky Derby timber remains to be seen. Perhaps out of those races another Black Gold, Bagenbaggage, Root to Boot or Spanish Prince may emerge. Looking over the prospective starters in the Jefferson Derby, to be run at the Shrewsbury course January 23, the closing day of the meeting at that course, shows several high class three-year-olds in the list of fifteen or twenty. The Jefferson Derby is over one mile and contains a number of young horses which proved of stake class last year. Prominent among the proposed starters are such good ones as Lucky Tom, Flying Don, Renaissance, Texas Knight, Sir Melton, Princess Camelia, Defier, Mexico, Spring-steel, Our Cherrycote, Chicon, Simple Singer, Stimulator, Uma, Volta Maid, Camp Douglas, Sazerac, Thundertone, Jack B. and Haba-nerd. It is likely that about all of those named will be nominated for the Kentucky Derby, or at least those which race creditably in the Jefferson Derby. What other winter tracks, such as Tropical Park, Hialeah Park, Havana and Agua Caliente, will furnish in the way of candidates for the Churchill Downs feature is still in the offing. Going over the two-year-old winners of stake races last year it is discovered that as many as seventy colts, fillies and geldings of that age won worthwhile races, fixtures which had an added value. In this list were such prominent Derby material as Top Flight, Whizz James, Universe, Unique, Uncovered, Uncanny, Triology, Suntica, Sharp Thoughts, Proteus, Princess Camelia, Polonaise, Portam, Parry, Pardee, Our Fancy, Osculator, On Post, Morfair, Modern Queen, Minton, Microphone, Makalu, Mad Somers, Mad Pursuit, Mad Frump, Lord Avondale, Laughing Queen, Irenes Bob, Judge Primrose, Hygro, High Devine, Fred -Almy, Flying Don, Fall Apple, Faireno, Election Day, Economic, Don Romiro, Doctor Happy, Dexterity, Despoil, Depression, Delivered, Dark Victory, Dark Mission, Curacao, Count Continued on second page. KENTUCKY DERBY PROSPECTS Continued from first page. Bruno, Cold Check, Caryldon, Cambal, Butter Beans, Burning Blaze, Brocado, Brandon Mint, Bahamas, Allenfern, Tick On, Sweeping Light, Pairbypair and Air Pilot. Somewhere in this long list is the next Kentucky Derby winner. That is by no means sure, however, for many three-year-olds are named every year for the Kentucky Derby that were not stake winners the year before. At least one dozen or more are named every year which never started as two-year-olds. As it only costs 5 to get an eligible to the post in the Kentucky Derby, there are numerous ambitious owners who always name one of their charges, hoping that it will develop into a contestant for Derby honors before the day of the race rolls around. Midnight February 8 will be the last chance to name any three-year-old colt, filly or gelding for the Derby to be run May 7. Stake blanks will be mailed shoVtly and then all an owner has to do is send in the of the three-year-old accompanied by Ee 5 fee. Right now it looks as if the jy is going to be a rather open affair, 1
