SPECTACULAR CONTEST Arras Wears Down My Dandy in th Final Strides. Leap Year Handicap at Hialealj Park Results in Thrilling Stretch. Duel Weather Good. MIAMI, Fla., Jan. 26. For a fe.iture a Hialeah Park this afternoon, the offering oj the Miami Jockey Club was the Leap Yeal Handicap, a race of one mile for three-yean olds and over. It resulted in one of the besl finishes of the day when Mrs. H. Detures Arras, after a long stretch drive, wore down W. C. and E. W. Reicherts My Dandy, to bd winner by a narrow margin. Desha Breck enridges Royal Ruffin saved third from Street Singer, with Comstockery, recent conqueror of Vander Pool, and the only othei starter, last of the field. Weather and track conditions could not have been improved upon, and a new bit of color was added with a flock of pink flamingoes swimming about in the infield lake. The crowd was of generous proportions and an increase was noted in the volume of speculation. In the Leap Year Handicap, Arras was generally agreed upon as best at th weights, but he had a close call from de feat by the old son of Porte Drapeau, which, after setting all the pace, hung on with rare courage in the run through the stretch, It had really narrowed to a two-horse raca in the final furlong. GOOD START. The start was a good one, and when My Dandy went out to show the way, Mills took hold of Arras and rated him back of the Chicago campaigner. Then when Street Singer rushed up on the inside, Mills continued to sit still, and the half-brother to Caruso was the one to keep My Dandy rac ing along. The son of Porte Drapeau had something left himself, however, though he was carrying the burden of the pace. This was evident when Mills elected to send Arras after him turning into the stretch. There Street Singer was beaten but My Dandy was still racing gamely and Mills was forced to a drive. Arras responded gamely but it was not until a few strides from the finish that he had caught My Dandy to race past and win by a neck. In the meantime Royal Ruffin had passed Street Singer rather handily to take third. As for Comstockery, he was far out of it all the way and he showed none of the speed he had to defeat Vander Pool. Of course on that previous occasion the going was softer and it probably was more to the liking of the son of Chicle. FERVID SCORES. A good finish occurred in the race foe fillies and mares that was the first offering, It was a six furlong dash and fell to Mrs. J. M. Franklins Fervid, with Mrs. F. A Carreauds Port Harlem just saving second place from Fred Krafts Memories Dear and Mrs. T. R. Queens Angry Plume raced fourth. From a good start, Voila and Prioress were the ones to set the pace and Port Harlem was back of these with Fervid close after the daughter of The Porter. Port Harlem was crowded a bit with the result she was forced to make up considerable ground. Voila was first of the leaders to tire and then there was a closing up and Port Harlem raced wide to join the leaders while Prioress was pinched off. Memories Dear was also making up ground and this was the order when at the head of the stretch, Leischman found his way through on the inside with Fervid. Finishing gamely, the daughter of Dunlin was first past the line by slightly more than a length. Then there was a bitter fight for second place with Port Harlem earning the decision by a nose.
