DIXIE HANDICAP NOMINATIONS . Hate, Equipoise, Gallant Knight and Oanfli Among Eligibles. Equipoise Sound Again and Will Be Trained lor Racing This Year Dixie Coveted Stake. BALTIMORE, Md., Jan. 26. Nominations for the Dixie Handicap were announced here today by M. L. Daiger, secretary of the Maryland Jockey Club. Fifty-nine entries were received from forty stables. This stake which will be run at Pimlico on May 7, is for three-year-olds and over, and the distance is one mile and three sixteenths. It has an added value of 5,000. Weights will be announced February 1. Conspicuous among the nominations are A. C. Bostwicks Mate, winner last year of the Preakness and Classic stakes, in both of which he outran Twenty Grand; the Aud-ley Farms Gallant Knight, which made a new American record for six and a half furlongs at Churchill Downs last May; William Moores Vander Pool, Walter J. Salmons Mad Career, the Three Ds Stock Farms Arlington Oaks winner of last year, Canfli; William Ziegler, Jr.s Spinach and C. V. Whitneys Equipoise. The latter, incidentally, is reported to be sound again and trainer Freddie Hopkins, who campaigned him in 1930 as a two-year-old when he scored a number of brilliant stake victories, now has high hopes for him in the handicap division. Equipoise went amiss after a brief campaign last year. The Dixie Handicap is one of Americas historical fixtures. It was first run in 1870 as the Dinner Party Stakes, and -renewed the following year as the Reunion Stakes. It was run annually thereafter as the Dixie until 1888. It was not renewed again until 1924, when it was revived under present conditions. Previously it was a stake for three-year-olds exclusively, and the distance was two miles. Winners since 1924 were Chaco-let, Sarazen twice Mars, Mike Hall, Diav-olo, Sandy Ford and Paul Bunyan.
