BIG HORSE COLONY AT BOWIE Ninety-One Thoroughbreds Awaiting Opening of Maryland Season - Many Improvements at Track. BOWIE, Md., Feb. 18 Ninety-one thoroughbreds, the property of thirty-seven owners, are now going through their paces here in preparation for the opening of the 1932 eastern racing season in April. All but a few of the, colony wintered here and, due to the exceedingly mild winter; they are well advanced in training. Many horsemen plan to surprise the owners who have been racing in Florida, New Orleans, Cuba and Mexico since Marylands 1931 season ended. Dick Pending, racing secretary, who underwent an operation several months ago, has returned to the job. Although he has a home in Baltimore, superintendent Pending is living here so that he can give the horsemen every attention Many new improvements to this plant were made by Pending before he entered a Baltimore hospital. He still has numerous other improvements to make before he considers his plant up to the minute. When general manager Joseph B. Boyle and assistant manager Thomas Kirby Lynch return from Florida they will be agreeably surprised with Pendings work. Among the stables quartered here are the following: John J. There is little or no frost in the ground and the thoroughbreds are beginning to step lively in their morning exercises.
