NEW YORK TURF NOTES f Jockey L. Knapp has returned to Belmont Park from Agua Caliente where he rode since that meeting opened last Thanksgiving Day. He reported to trainer Bennet Creech of the W. R. Coe stable. Knapp will do the light weight riding for that establishment here this year. Jack OBrien, who has assisted trainer Frank Kearns for the last six years, stated today at Belmont Park, that he will train a division of the J. P. White stable this year. OBrien will take over the White horses now wintering at Freehold, N. J., and prepare them for a Canadian campaign next summer. Kearns will confine his activities to the metropolitan tracks and will race the string of Whites horses now wintering at Columbia, S. C. James Fitzsimmons braved the cold weather at Aqueduct Thursday morning and supervised the workouts of his charges. The juveniles were breezed a slow three-eighths around the turn, while the older horses galloped along at a two-minute rate. The veteran conditioners charges are progressing nicely in their early preparation. C. W. Damon, who trains the stable of J. G. Lang of Goshen, N. Y., will ship his string of ten to Aqueduct from winter quarters March 2. The stable of Mrp John Hertz will arrive at Belmont Park from winter quarters in Cary, 111., Monday. Trainer Bill Knapp will accompany the shipment. Jack Phillips has resigned his position as trainer for the Pauline Stable, over which he presided for two years. Phillips, who recently returned from Havana and Miami, is said to be negotiating with the Newbury Stable and may take over the stock of that establishment. Jerry Murphy has succeeded Steve Lawlor as trainer for the Quincy Stable. The Quin-cy racers are stabled at Aqueduct. J. "Sammy" Smith, who trains the horses of Victor Emanuels Dorwood Stable, was a visitor at Belmont Park Thursday morning, to arrange for the overhauling of his employers private barn, at the Nassau county track. Smith, who has wintered the Dorwood Stable horses at Columbia, S. C, reported that the string will be shipped north March 15. The trainer plans to race a few of his charges at the Bowie meeting in April. Bennett Creech was a busy horseman at Belmont Park today. Although he only recently returned from Agua Caliente, he had his big string galloping on the training track. Trainer John Johnson, who is in charge of the hors"es of James Butler, expressed doubt today of his ability to have the good handicap horse, Questionnaire ready for rac- ing this summer. The five-year-old suffered a slight bow last year and is not responding to treatment as rapidly as his trainer would like. George M. Odom, who has been racing a string of horses at Hialeah Park, is expected back in Belmont Park within the next few days. Upon his return he will resume active charge of the strings of Robert I Gerry, Marshall Field and Mrs. Parker Corning, which have been wintering at the Westchester Racing Associations plant.
