AGUA CALIENTE DERBY SUNDAY Crack Band Expected to Start in Border Feature Trainer Lee Has Formidable Trio. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, March 2. Racing fans below the border are looking forward to one of the outstanding races of the winter season Sunday, when a number of first class three-year-olds meet in the ,000 added Agua Caliente Derby. It is estimated that almost a dozen horses will go to the post and at present it seems difficult to select the most likely winner. Trainer L. O. Lee will hold a strong hand in Cabezo, Joe Flores and Burton Agnes, the trio under his care, while Sharp Thoughts, Bahamas, Nacho, John Bane and Durango are not to be overlooked. Other probable starters are Daily News, Altmark and Gal-lineta. The distance of the Derby is one and one-sixteenth miles and some good horses have won the race in the past. In glancing over the list of previous winners we find the names of Carlaris, Justice F., Naishapur, Up, Greyola, Dr. Wilson, Deep Thoughts and Blanc Seing, all horses which have helped make turf history. Despite the fact that this season the purse has been cut in half, interest in the race is none the less keen and inasmuch as Cabezo, Joe Flores and Bahamas are considered strong contenders for the Agua Caliente Handicap, the race will likely have a bearing on that event. Speaking of the Agua Caliente Handicap, another threat in that race loomed up this morning in the form of Ervast, which put in by far his best work since his injury. With jockey Coltiletti in the saddle, the former Baron Long racer went one and one-eighth miles in the following fractions: :24, :49; 1:13, 1:40, 1:53. Alexander Pantages, another eligible for the race, went six furlongs in 1:14, while Phar Lap jogged one mile and galloped two. Dr. Freeland, which sustained a slight cut on his leg when he struck himself during the running of the Fashion Stakes Sunday, did not appear on the track, but will likely have a good workout Thursday.
