KENTUCKY DERBY PROSPECTS Cabezo Appears Best of Eligibles Now Appearing in Competition at Winter Tracks. What of the eligibles for the Kentucky Derby that are running on the winter tracks? Two of the winter Derbys have been run and two others are close at hand. The winter tracks have shown what they have developed and their hands do not seem to be very strong. The defeat of Lucky Tom in the Florida Derby was a surprise, but the manner of his defeat was almost a sensation. The filly, Evening, not a candidate for the Kentucky Derby, made a show of the entire field and Lucky Toms performance was worse than all the rest. Had the Robinson colt come through with victory in that feature there is little doubt that he would right now be rated a. strong Kentucky possibility, but defeat has deprived him even of being the standout for the Louisiana Derby, which is to be decided on the track, where he ran so well before being shipped to Florida. Cabezo now appears to be the best bet of the winter tracks for the Kentucky Derby. This youngster, lacking the reputation that Lucky Tom made as a two-year-old, has shown two flashes of class in his western racing, once when he defeated Sharp Thoughts and Joe Flores and again when he led a field which included Dr. Freeland, Marine, Durangd and Seths Hope. Of course, in the latter event, Cabezo had little weight to carry, nevertheless it was a good performance. In the first of the pair of victories, which was in the Derby Trial Stakes at Agua Caliente, he was pretty well burdened with 119 pounds, Sharp Thoughts carrying 123 and Joe Flores 122. Cabezo led throughout the seven-eighths of a mile on a sloppy track and won by two and a half lengths. Later on, on a fast track, Cabezo was beaten by Bahamas and Sharp Thoughts at three-quarters of a mile, Cabezo and Sharp Thoughts carrying 115 pounds and Bahamas 110. Neither Bahamas, Sharp Thoughts nor Joe Flores is eligible for the Churchill Downs classic. Cabezo has interesting possibilities. He is a gelded son of Carlaris, which won both the Tijuana Derby and Coffroth Handicap now the Agua Caliente Derby and Handicap in 1926. The son has a chance to duplicate this feat, and if he does especially if he conquers Phar Lap and Dr. Freeland in the rich handicap he certainly will come to the Middle West in very high favor. The western track has a habit of sending colorful three-year-olds eastward. After Carlaris came Sir Harry, then Naishapur, then Er-vast. Naishapur finished second to Clyde Van Dusen in the Derby of 1929. If Cabezo fails in the Agua Caliente Derby the winter tracks will lack impressive representation in the big Derby unless Lucky Tom should return to favor in the Louisiana Derby, or some other eligible now training for this event outclasses his opposition. Even if Lucky Tom wins at New Orleans he will not be accorded the recognition that would have been his but for the Florida failure, and as for the other three-year-olds at New Orleans they have not been distinguished for their consistency. Sazerac, winner of the Derby Trial Handicap at the Fair Grounds, has made more progress than any of the others, having won his last three starts or half of the races he has run this year. s t . . ; : i l I L I I
