HEADS JUVENILE LIST j Surpasses All Fillies in Earnings as a Two-Year-Old. J • i First to Annex Over 00,000 in J First Year of Racing — Inter- i i esting Tabulation. i I ♦ j Cornelius V. Whitneys Top Flight cer- j tainly made history for the two-year-old j fillies and gave them a mark to shoot at, ] probably for years to come, when she won 1 19,000 in her seven races. No other juve- j nile filly has even approached such a sum. -The only one that had previously passed ] 00,000 was Mrs. John Hertz Anita Pea- ] body, which, it will be remembered by sharp | minds on statistics, defeated her stablemate, ; the illustrious Reigh Count, in the Futurity j of 1927. ] Others have won more races in a season ; than Top Flight. Moisant, a daughter of ; Hamburg, won ten in 1911. Miss Jemima won ] eight in 1919, Careful twelve in 1920 and • Khara won eight for the Rancocas Stable in 1929. But none of these won "important" ! money as reckoned by the totals reached by i Top Flight and Anita Peabody. Anita Peabodys total in 1927 was 11,905. She won 1,790 of this in the Futurity when she defeated Reigh Count a nose, Victorian a half length behind. Her other winnings were comparatively small — ,700 in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs; ,340 in Joliet Stakes at Lincoln Fields, and so on in lesser amounts. She won six of her seven races. H. P. Whitneys Mother Goose was a big money winner in 1924, though she won only three of her ten races. Her Futurity was worth 5,730. She beat Stimulus a head and Single Foot was only a nose behind Stimulus. The field included Nedana, Kentucky Cardinal, By Hisself, American Flag and Joe Marrone III. Mother Gooses only other victory of any value was in the Fashion Stakes, when she defeated her stable-mate Maud Muller and took down ,925. Her total for the year was 2,775. Greater than the earnings of Mother Goose were those of W. S. Kilmers Sallys Alley back in 1922. Sallys Alley fell only a little short of the century mark in thousands — 4,847. She started in eleven races and won five, including the Futurity Stakes and one division of the Pimlico Futurity, which was run in two sections that year. In the Futurity she beat Zev by three lengths. Wilderness third. Twenty-three started and in the beaten field were Blossom Time, of the Idle Hour Stable; Cyclops and Martingale. The two divisions of the Pimlico Futurity were run on November 4. Blossom Time won the first and Sallys Hour the second, beating Martingale. My Own was third. Each division was worth 1,015 to the winner. Three days after that Sallys Hour and Martingale met in the Pimlico Futurity Cup, at a mile, they the only starters. The only prize was a gold cup and there was no betting. Martingale, carrying 122 to Sallys 116, was the winner. Regret, the only filly that ever won the Kentucky Derby, for which Top Flight is an acknowledged candidate in its next running, had, like Top Flight, a perfect record in her first racing season, but the daughter of Broomstick started only three times and her victories did not include the Futurity. Her biggest winning was in the Hopeful Stakes, which then was worth only ,500 to the winner. Her total for the year was only 7,390. Regrets record was brilliant, though abbreviated. She made her first start in the twelfth Saratoga Special, a fixture that had been won by Irish Lad, Sysonby, Colin and . others of fame, and has since been captured by Hannibal, Tryster, Morvich, St. James, Blue Larkspur, Whichone, Jamestown and Top Flight. Next Regret won the Sanford Memorial in a canter with 127 pounds up and then climaxed her juvenile season by winning the Hopeful, carrying 127 in that also. Fair Star, in 1926, reached a total of 8,960 without the Futurity Stakes, but she won the Pimlico Futurity, which was worth 9,660. There were some notables in that field also— Whiskery was third, and Boston-ian. Valorous and Jock were among the unplaced. Fair Star also won the Selima Stakes. *
