BARTELSTEIN BIG WINNER • Leads Tanforan Owners Through Victories of Polydorus. ♦ Aged Scimitar One of Surprises of Meeting, Joining Gallant Sir, Fana Franka in Winning Western Stakes. A. Bartelstein had the best winning combination, so far as purse values were concerned, at Tanforan during the spring meeting, and his total of winnings, amounting to 4,645, was almost double that of his nearest rival, the#Oak Tree Stable. The latter won an even dozen races to Bartel-steins nine, but through the stake successes of Polydorus the Bartelstein establishment was an easy leader in money won. Polydorus, a Friar Rock four-year-old, won five races, including the Oakland Claiming Handicap, worth ,495, the Gov. James Rolph, Jr., Handicap, worth ,025, and the Au Revoir Handicap, worth ,605. The Oak Tree Stable won ,750 with its twelve firsts, five seconds and nine thirds in cheaper events. Polydorus won ,425 in his five winning starts, more than twice as much as any other horse. J. W. Marchbanks two-year-old Xingu was second, winning ,225, with two victories and two thirds. The Marchbank stable was third in the list of owner winnings. Other conspicuous winners in the Bartelstein stable were Sidney Grant and Yonkel, the latter winning the Derby Candidates Handicap. The big surprise of the meeting was the aged Scimitar, which had finished third to Phar Lap and Reveille Boy in the Agua Caliente Handicap. After running second to Bahamas in the Inaugural Claiming Handicap at Tanforan, he won the first running of the Spring Special Handicap, defeating the best field of handicap horses that could be assembled at the. California track. He paid the equivalent of nearly twenty to one. The three-year-old Gallant Sir, a Kentucky Derby starter, and the juvenile Pana Franka were other stake winners at Tanforan, and some of the best performers in the plater division were C. D. Henleys Freight Clerk, C. B. Irwins Gabbo and C. Holts Ante Bel-lum. The three-year-old Joe Flores won ,800 for S. H. Lee.
