QUEENSWAY PLATE FAVORITE ♦ Field, of Twelve Predicted for First Feature at Woodbine. ■ Seagram Stable Has Strong Representation In Shady Well and King OConnor-Royal Guest Is Ready. t TORONTO, Ont., May 19. — There will not be a bulky field for the seventy-third running of the Kings Plate. The outlook is for twelve, at the outside, to line up at the barrier Saturday afteroon, and one of those, R. S. McLaughlins Skygazer, is still e doubtful starter. Yet the race remains one of the most open in years. Queensway, R. W. R. Cowies chestnut filly, is a sure starter and likely favorite for the prize. The queenly daughter of Old Koenig and Chrysobel was given a sharp five furlongs in 1:01% Thursday morning, and appears right on edge for her plate effort. Jockey Frank Mann, of course, will have the mount. H. C. Hatchs Easter Hatter, one of the highly regarded entries, was expected in late Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning from Hamilton, where he received all his conditioning, and will not likely be asked for more than a short speed test before he goes to the post. Jockey G. Riley will have the mount on this one. Royal Guest, the grey four-year-old daughter of Sky Rocket and Madam Marjory, which was robbed of her plate opportunity last year through illness, will likely be the only dependence of R. H. New, Hamilton sportsman, this year. The lightweight, W. Roberts, may ride this one. The Ridgewood Farms entry, Easter Dandy, is listed among the probable starters, and the stable is praying for rain to enhance the chances of this son of Fitzwil-liam and Tiarco. J. OMalley will probably have the mount on him. The Seagram Stable has definitely decided upon Shady Well and King OConnor to bear the famous black and yellow silks in Saturdays renewal, and many look upon the former as the horse for Queensway to beat for the prize this year. Legere will undoubtedly ride Shady Well and, while definite plans have not as yet been announced, it is altogether likely that the Waterloo establishment will avail itself of the services of that very capable pilot, "Whitey" Abel, to pilot King OConnor. Bronze and Serfman have been selected from the original four entries of the Thorn-cliffe Stable to carry the canary and black stripes of the Davies Brothers in the race, and trainer Johnny Hynes has high hopes of the former carrying the famous old colors into first place. If he fails, there will be no excuses. The four-year-old son of Oil Man and Pushpin has been especially reserved for this engagement, making only two starts, in the Kings Plate and Breeders Stakes, last year, in both of which he finished second, and he is as fit as hands can make him at the present time. Tommy Aimers, the contract rider for the stable, will likely have the mount on Bronze, and Charlie Ralls, who has handled Serfman in practically all of his work this spring, will be seen aboard that horse Saturday. Last, but by no means least, there is the W. H. Wright entry to consider, namely, Spey Crest and Fragrant Gift. If trials mean anything, and, of course, they do, this pair must be taken into serious consideration, for horsemen at the track are still talking about final distance tests of this pair. Lou Schaefer, who recently signed a contract with the stable, galloped Spey Crest Thursday morning and will be aboard the gelded son of Spey Pearl in his Plate effort. Willie Cleverley will probably have the mount on the other, Fragrant Gift, which has been going along well with the more highly regarded member of the entry in all his works.
