LACE SHAWL IN HARD DRIVE Mrs. V. W. Hendricks Filly Defeats . Blue John at Devonshire. Fair Jack Finishes Strong as Liberty Ace Again Disappoints Ima Dreamer Wins Fred Zierer Purse. WINDSOR, Ont., Sept. 1. Mrs. V. W. Hendricks Lace Shawl continued to improve in her racing today to such an extent that she defeated the large field "which went to the post for the decision of the Greyhound Lines Purse, at three-quarters of a mile, and finishing behind were several sprinters which attracted-a heavy play in the mutuels. Blue John, one of the well supported, made a gallant fight to land this purse. He was leading to the turn into the stretch, where Lace Shawl moved up to the front, and in the subsequent drive it appeared that Blue John would regain the lead, but the Spanish Prince II. filly had just enough left to stick it out to the finish. Fair Jack made a strong finish, and Rose Twig closed a gap, while Liberty Ace ran another dull race and was never seriously in the running. Ima Dreamer won the Fred Zierer Purse, the third race, and paid off handsomely. This race was marred by some crowding, for which the winner was a trifle responsible, bearing over on Inarage and forcing him to take back. Sun B. made a strong challenge after Ima Dreamer wore down Don-Alvara and finished second, ahead of Flying Atom, which closed fast. A condition race for juveniles over the five and one-half furlongs distance, that engaged a field of ten, began the afternoons n entertainment. v Dome, the favorite, was returned the winner, scoring handily over Dark War. Crackle was third, barely saving that part of the award from Wooly West. The latter ran a winning race, coming from last place, in the last half mile, after being forced to take back when caught in close quarters soon after the start. Dark War and Dome had things pretty much their own way, with Dome supplanting the filly in. the lead as they swung around the far turn. Munden kept the ultimate winner under steadying restraint while making the pace and enjoyed a lead of better than a length as he crossed the finishing line. Dark War continued with good courage and, while unequal to the task of holding the winner, had a safe advantage over Crackle. Pertoxical, performing back to his early spring promise, annexed his first set of brackets by -accounting for the jockey Phillips Memorial. This was a dash of five and a half furlongs, for Canadian-bred juveniles. Under the handling of Harold Thomas, Pertoxical was kept in near attendance of the pace established by Bald Crest. Straightening out for the run to the finish, Pertoxical soon ran down the pacemaker and was drawing out all the closing seventy yards. Khaki John, the choice, coupled with Taximan, as the Thorncliffe Stable entry, after delaying the start by his unruly actions, was forced to work his way through the field, closed with a brilliant burst of speed, but was unable to reach the winner. The son of First Sight gained second place by a half length, while Bald Crest, after showing speed in pacemaking, weakened and just lasted to take the show position from Surfun. An upset occurred in the running of the three-quarters of the third when Ima Dreamer, racing for H. T. Palmer, defeated C. E. Grahams Sun B. Third place went to the lot .of Flying Fantom, which performs for the local owner W. C. Irvine. The score of the Palmer plater was made the easier for him when Inarage was badly knocked about when passing the half-mile post. Don Alvaro went into a good lead midway around the turn and, as the Runnymede colt tired, Ima Dreamer went to the front and, under hard riding, held on long enough to outlast Sun B. The latter raced prominently placed all the way and was going stoutly at the wind up. Flying Fantom came from far back to be a rapid-going third. Inarage, after meeting interference, got going again and was moving up on the inside. He was taken to the outside, but was unable to improve his position in the final drive.
