COL. S. L. JAMES DIES SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Sept. 1. Col. Samuel L. James, recognized for many years as one of Americas foremost turf handicappers, died at his Saratoga residence at 3:45 a. m. today, following the complication resulting from a paralytic stroke suf- fered early this spring. He was born on the Angola plantation of his father in Louisiana sixty-five years ago and for many years had been an ardent follower of the turf. He originated the "speed chart," a system of figures now used extensively by many professional handicappers, and was credited with being a successful player. He was made a member of the governors staff in his early youth and served with the National Guard of his home state. The funeral services will be held at Kark3 Undertaking Parlors, Lake Avenue and Circular Street, at 11:30 a. m. tomorrow, and. the body will be shipped to New Orleans for interment. He is survived by his widow, two daughters and one son.
