COURSE SUITS A LA CARTE B. B. Stables Recent Acquisition Wins Ardsley Claiming Stakes. Pennate Makes Strong Finish to Defeat; Wishing Star and Pays Large Price Shoot Is an Easy Winner. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 19. Disagreeable conditions prevailed for the third day of the Empire City meeting and pronounced mud-ders enjoyed another field day. The track was the worst of the meeting and the crowd was limited to regulars. The Ardsley Claiming Stakes was the featured offering of the afternoon and this resulted in a victory for the B. B. Stables recent claim, A la Carte. Ridden by the veteran Pete Walls, this fellow reveled in the going and at no stage of the journey left the ultimate result in doubt. Rubio, from the Geneseo Stable, was the one to race to the place, while the Montalvo Stud Farm was third with Moine. Lullaby n. and Stormy Dawn completed the field. A la. Carte was a pronounced choice for the race. The start was a good one and Walls took A la Carte to the front as the first turn was reached. Rubio always raced in nearest pursuit, while Lullaby H. and Moine were heads apart, leading Stormy Dawn. When straightened out for the run through the back stretch, Moine improved his position steadily and had no trouble in shaking off Lullaby II. Rounding the stret"h turn A la Carte drew away steadily and at the finish was well in hand, winning by five lengths. Rubio withstood determined opposition from Moine to save the place, while Lullaby H. outlasted Stormy Dawn at the end. The race netted the winner 45. The Western Stable, owned by Mrs. T. W. OBrien, widow of the famous sportsman, scored its first success of the year when Bonnie Lad, ridden by Jackie Long, was a driving winner of the first race, fashioned for maiden tv. o-year-olds under claHning conditions. W. Hogans Oriley was the one to race to second place, while Frederick A. Griffiths Longford was third. The start was a good one, but when the Webbing was released Longford was unprepared, and was last away. Bonnie Lad, Justice B. and Rye were the quickest in motion and drew away. In the meantime Longford had been rushed up on the outside, and at the far turn was lapped on the leaders. Bonnie Lad came through on the inside turning for home and, under pressure, wore down Oriley, while Longford faltered at the end and was a good third. Pennate, which trainer Tom Healey of the C. V. Whitney stable presented to Mickey Sheedy during the fall meeting at Belmont Park, surprised everyone at Empire City by accounting for the third race in a drive over Wishing Star, while French Lass was third. The winner was ridden by Jackie Long, completing a double for that rider. Alcman proved an easy winner of the final race of the day. He drew away in the final furlong and led home Sara Burdon, while Affirmative outlasted Gloria Maris for the short end of the purse. The winner was ridden by Bernius and was given considerable support. Whisking turned in a sparkling effort to account for the fifth race. This fellow was practically left at the post, worked his way up steadily on the inside and wore down Beguile at the end. Margie W. was third. Twelve started and the start was none too good. Whisking and Braggadocio followed the others away, while Peter was left. Poly-fon and Tulane showed the most early speed, but on the far turn Walls had assumed command with Beguile. The latter appeared all over a winner in the stretch, but at the finish tired suddenly. " In the meantime. Whisking had worked his way up on the inside and finished with a rush that was carrying him fastest of all at the end.
