BOBSLED IS DEFEATED 1 Favorite Loses Hawthorne Feature ! to A. Bartelsteins Teralice. Gunfire Surprises in Third and Pays 3 Long Odds Prometheus Proves Best in Second. CICERO, 111., Aug. 11 With the favorite Bobsled receiving a poor, almost weird, ride at the hands of the veteran James Smith, ; Teralice, the son of Terry which A. Bartel- stein, local owner, claimed three weeks ago ; for ,500, got away with top honors in the Timber Trails Purse, an allowance race for ! three-year-olds that filled the feature posi- tion on the card at Hawthorne this after- : noon. Teralice, ridden by the youngster, J. : Lowry, reached the end of the mile and one-sixteenth, a length and one-half before Bob- ; sled, which did well under the riding received, to save second honors and money for the E. R. Bradley stable. Silent Shot, the J. E. Hughes representative, was third, a head back of the runner-up and a little more than two lengths in front of Edith A. The race also attracted Spartan Lady and One Chance, the field being the smallest of the afternoon. "While Lowry got the winner away fast, Smith brought the favorite out of the stalls after all of his five rivals were under way and for almost three-quarters didnt seem to know just where he wanted to go with the Bradley gelding. Time after time he started up on the inside only to ease back and when he finally did make a serious move he svung his mount to the extreme outside entering the stretch. All the while Lowry had steadied the winner as he alternated with Spartan Lady in the pacemaking and, after drawing away approaching the final eighth he was safe from the Bradley and Hughes three-year-olds in the late stages. Edith A. went along in smart fashion throughout, while Spartan Lady and One Chance gave way badly in the stretch. The winner .ran the distance on the fast track in 1:47 and it was his first victory under the Bartelstein colors. SEVENTH PURSE OF SEASON. The much raced Bichloride earned his seventh purse of the year when he won decisively over Foxland Hall, Pete and nine others from among the poorer grade three-year-olds in the sixth race. The large field raced one mile and a sixteenth and when ready in the stretch the winner readily forged to the front and on to victory by two lengths as Foxland Hall outstayed the fast-finishing Pete by a head. Representative and "Double Date, choices over the winner, finished in fourth and fifth places. The racing opened with the defeat of the short-priced favorite, when Ima Count, trying for his maiden victory, went down before J. Marschs Broadstep, Cloudet and Skimalong in the five and one-half furlongs contest of maiden two-year-old colts and geldings at the top of the program. The choice failed to withstand the leaders in the final drive, where Broadstep and Cloudet came on in a stubborn duel that closed with the Marsch colt a neck before the Aud-ley Farm youngster. Skimalong, which closed strongest of all, was only a short lengti away from Cloudet and as far in the van of the retiring Ima Count. Twelve participated. EASY FOR PROMETHEUS. Prometheus, Mrs. W. R. Padgetts useful Broomstick gelding, found a field he could conquer in His Last, Princess Carolyn and the seven others that opposed him at six and one-half furlongs in the second race. Raced from behind the pace of Brown Wisdom and La Salle, the six-year-old winner easily held His Last and Princess Carolyn safe in the late stages, where La Salle and Brown Wisdom tired badly. The victor was the favorite and was ridden by W. D. Wright. Showing an improved and game performance, Gunfire squeezed out a nose win over March King in the three-quarters race, which also witnessed the complete overthrow of the choices when Cold Check and Martie FJynn failed to finish among the three lead- Continued on twenty-second page. After cutting out a good pace to the stretch, the winner appeared doomed to defeat when March King wrested the lead from him, but he was not through and when March King faltered in the late stages, Gunfire was back in front just in time to earn the honors. Although he was beaten by more than a length by the leaders Rusty raced well and was clearly best of the others. Neither of the choices was dangerous at any time. With a rush in the stretch, H. P. Headleys Amscray, which was ridden by J. Westrope, raced to a popular victory over nine other two-year-old fillies in the fourth race, for which the distance , was five and one-half furlongs. The Headley miss scored by a half length with Ytfin in the place position and Mamie D. third. After dropping back to last in the first three-sixteenths and making a wide sweep on the turn, the winner rushed into the lead on the outside in the stretch and, while the effort left her with little for the late stages, she managed to stall off Ytfin as Mamie D., fell back in the spirited stretch drive."
