Here and There on the Turf Progress of Cavalcade High Quest a Good One Equipoise Moves Up Again Cavalcade the handsome black son of Lancegaye and Hastily a daughter of Hurry On which cost Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane only 1200 as a yearling bids fair to become the champion threeyearold of the year Unbeaten in his three starts which include the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace as well as the Kentucky Derby Saturday he has earned 35625 this year But even last year he proved himself a rare yearling bar ¬ gain when he earned 15730 with two vic ¬ tories one of which was the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park in Chicago ChicagoIn In the Preakness of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico Saturday Bob Smith has another of Mrs Sloan es colts eligible for that running which is a worthy companion to Cavalcade He is High Quest which already has the Wood Memorial to his credit Last year High Quest was generally considered as a better colt and a better prospect than his illustrious stablemate and incidentally he only cost 3500 He won 15025 in his first year of endeavor endeavorThe The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness is a double of big importance and only three colts have scored in both these They have been Sir Barton Gallant Fox and Burgoo King KingAnd And Smith is particularly well equipped with two such colts as Cavalcade and High Quest to say nothing of Time Clock with which he won the Florida Derby at Hialeah Park in March All three are liberally en ¬ gaged and one or the other should be ready as the engagements come along alongAccording According to reports Smith may save Cavalcade for the American Derby and de ¬ pend on High Quest for the Preakness in any event the stable will still be adequately represented in the running runningThen Then the stable is also to be congratulated on the services of Mack Garner the veteran of the saddle who is riding in just as good form as he showed at any time in the twenty years he has been wearing racing silks silksInvaders Invaders from the East proved themselves In the running of the Derby when first sec ¬ ond and third went to that section Of course Cavalcade after being a bit tardy at the start proved easily master of the field and had the comfortable winning margin of two and a half lengths at the finish but A G Vanderbilts Discovery also ran a smashing race to be an easy second while Agrarian amply demonstrated his ability when he raced third thirdMrs Mrs Hellers colt Agrarian closed a con ¬ siderable gap in the running but it was a truly run race and there was reason for his showing becoming speed through the stretch when he was so lacking in speed through the early racing This fellow is a remarkable development of the winter racing racingLast Last year Agrarian was rated a plater and in no sense a remarkable one He won his first race last July and he was raced under a valuation of 2500 in one of his winning efforts It was not until the winter racing and he had a busy juvenile season that the son of Sickle showed any form of conse ¬ quence There George Strate huilt him up Continued on tiventyfifth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page until in the Florida Derby he finished sec ¬ ond to Time Clock At Havre de Grace he was second to Cavalcade the first time the Derby winner was raced and again he fin ¬ ished second to him in the Chesapeake beat ¬ ing such as Time Supply Discovery and Singing Wood Then his third in the Derby was right in line with his other perform ¬ ances ancesOf Of course it may be that condition played a part in the triumph of Cavalcade There is no denying he was perfectly trained for his triumph and it is possible some of the Kentuckians had a condition excuse It was the first racing effort of the year for Mata Hari and she was worn out to an extent by her actions at the post She is almost sure to improve over her showing showingSir Sir Thomas so highly considered for a time among the eligibles may have gone stale in his long preparation His one race before the Derby suggested that he had gone sour and the race was too far below his trials to be a real index of his form formWhile While the East made a clean sweep it must be remembered that nine of the thir ¬ teen in the field carried eastern silks in the running But it was only because there were no more than four of the Kentucky lot con ¬ sidered worthy to start Another month may bring some changes in ratings but just now Cavalcade Mrs Sloane Bob Smith and Mack Garner are sitting on top of the world There is one end of racing that is fre ¬ quently not watched as closely by the stew ¬ ards as it should be and that is the matter of equipment Of course a trainer has to report any change of equipment on his horses and this has to do with the wearing of blinkers but when winning form is shown with or without blinkers the successful equipment should be insisted upon in future races racesThis This is brought to mind by reason of two recent winners at Jamaica on which the equipment had been changed from a pre ¬ vious losing race To many horses the blink ¬ ers make all the difference in the world and it is the duty of the stewards to see to it that there is good and sufficient reason for a change in equipment and that the trainers are consistent in tha rigging of their horses horsesThe The Dixie Handicap was little more than a walkover for the champion Equipoise and he added nothing to his sterling repu ¬ tation but the prize served to carry him Into second place in the money score His total has now reached 332960 which car ¬ ries him by Phar Lap and he is now only topped by Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Beau with his total of 376744 It was not much of a racing achievement to beat such as Chatmoss Flaming Mamie and Jovius in the Dixie but that was just one more evidence of the fame of the son of Pennant and Swinging other sportsmen being unwilling to run after him with their eligibles when they victoryThere saw no remote chance for victory There was real disappointment when Mrs John Bosley did not send out her unbeaten Chase Me The remarkable son of Purchase was in receipt of ten pounds from Equipoise in the handicap and many good judges con ¬ sidered his chance a good one at that dif ¬ ference However Mrs Bosley decided that her gelding was possibly not yet up to a con ¬ dition to have a go at the champion and accordingly he was scratched scratchedChase Chase Me was plainly the only nominee in the Dixie field that appeared to have even a remote chance to beat the champion and now that the issue was dodged it is possible the meeting will never be brought about but in the meantime Chase Me remains undefeated
