IMPERIAL BETSY WINS Furnishes Second Surprise of Day at Detroit Fair Grounds Jockeys Coucci and Winters in Lime ¬ light Manners Accounts for the Fifth Race DETROIT Mich June 22 Twoyearolds performed in the best offering of an ordi ¬ nary card at the Fair Grounds this after ¬ noon and at the end of the five furlongs dash the Detroitowned Imperial Betsy carrying the colors of John Anhuts Imperial Farms Stable was a driving winner Second went to Mose Lowensteins Divide which beat Nix Hunters favored Lan by two lengths for the second award A small field of eight youngsters started and Imperial Betsys score was the second mild surprise of the afternoon afternoonWith With cloudy skies threatening rain the attendance was not up to the standard for a Friday Shortly after the running of the best race there was a light drizzle which continued for the remainder of the after ¬ noon noonWhile While Sun Teaparty was the first in mo ¬ tion Divide lost little time in reaching the lead and in a nip and tuck duel he came to the stretch with a slight advantage over Sun Teaparty At that stage Divide bore out carrying his opponent with him This allowed Imperial Betsy to come through on the inside and midway in the stretch she had headed the leader Although unable to reach a commanding lead she held the lat ¬ ter safe and the finish found her three quarters of a length before Divide DivideForced Forced to race on the outside throughout Lan beat the tiring Sun Teaparty by a head for the minor award Dark Dianne which enjoyed strong support bore out badly in the stretch and was bothered by Dokas in the last furlong Continued on fourteenth page IMPERIAL BETSY WINS WINSContinued Continued from first page Mack Winters evened scores with Coucci when he rode his second winner astride the favored Manners in the fifth race Crackle making his 1934 debut was second nearly three lengths back of the victor and a head before Style Corner which beat Timorous by a nose for the minor award awardSix Six started and Crackle sprinted into a long lead before the close of the first quar ¬ ter Winters bided his time with Manners and although Manners was forced to go to the outside entering the stretch he wore down Crackle in the last furlong and drew away to his big advantage advantageCharles Charles T Fishers Detroitowned Dixiana stable furnished another winner when Lead ¬ ing Article left the threeyearold maiden ranks in the first race Second went to Black Song with the stanchly supported Walkalong third thirdTen Ten three and fouryearold maidens con ¬ tested the six furlongs and while Black Song and the winner raced head and head to the stretch Coucci drove the Fisher color bearer into a clear lead after reaching the final furlong Displaying greenness for it was his first start of the year and the sec ¬ ond of his career Leading Article was under good pressure to the finish From a slow beginning Walkalong bettered his po ¬ sition gradually and lucky to find room on the inside he wore down Sun Envoy in the closing stages stagesPrefer Prefer making her first start in almost a year and stanchly supported in the bet ¬ ting carried the colors of Mrs A M Creech to a driving victory over nine others in the threequarters second race Kilmore was second with Gracious Gift third thirdDespite Despite an injury to his eye which neces ¬ sitated several stitches Mack Winters who was thrown from Betty Marie in the pad ¬ dock before the start of the first race rode a clever race astride the winner Content to allow the speedy Fannie Brice show the way to the far turn Winters drove the Creech mare into the lead after leaving the back stretch and although Prefer showed an inclination to bear out during the run through the stretch he kept her a length before Kilmore which reached second posi ¬ tion after a half mile Always the best of the others Gracious Gift lasted to beat In ¬ ferno Lad a head for third thirdSilvio Silvio Coucci the Bronx Italian rode his second winner of the afternoon when he brought the Starmount Stables Doeskin to the finish of the threequarters third race a popular victor over Kalola Campagna was best of the ten other fillies and mares Although Sun B offered the winner a mild challenge in the run to the far turn she tired quickly when Kalola took up the chase At the end of the first threeeighths Kalola made a strong challenge for leadership but Coucci kept the winner in the van and al ¬ though under strong urging Doeskin held a length advantage at the finish From a slow beginning Campagna improved her po ¬ sition rapidly and lucky to save ground on the last turn was much the best of the well regarded Two Tricks
