FEATURE DECLARED OFF Heavy Shower Changes Footing at Washington Park to Sloppy Sparkling Rose Disqualified in Open ¬ ing Race Days Program Re duced to Seven Races HOMEWOOD 111 June 22 A heavy shower falling just before noon at Wash ¬ ington Park here today caused the course to be sloppy and the already small fields were riddled with scratches while the fea ¬ ture attraction the Illinois Central Purse had to be declared off entirely A substi ¬ tute could not be arranged by racing sec ¬ retary Will Shelley because of the late hour and the program of eight races was reduced to seven sevenWell Well backed horses were victorious in a majority of the events and close finishes were conspicuous by their absence with many of the successful horses winning with several lengths to spare and something in reserve reserveThe The crowd was a small one as could have been expected under the conditions even though weather conditions improved consid ¬ erably during the afternoon afternoonThe The day was marked by the disqualifica ¬ tion of Sparkling Rose from third place in the opening dash for interfering with Brother Lou Jockey J McCoy the for ¬ mers rider was rightfully held blameless for the foul which occurred at the quarter post postThe The second disqualification of the meeting occurred in the opening dash engaging six plater juveniles when Sparkling Rose lost third money in favor of Brother Lou The Rosehome Stables Winder was the winner of the five furlongs event but only after a stretch duel with Shan which the Fair Wind gelding defeated a head under a strong finish by Eddie Arcaro Sparkling Rose was some distance farther away after having set the pace until collared by the winner She swerved while weakening bumping Brother Lou which was making an attempt to slip through on the inside insideG G Rileys Star Flash a recent arrival Continued on fourteenth page FEATURE DECLARED OFF OFFContinued Continued from first page from Detroit easily proved best of the three other sprinting platers meeting at seven furlongs in the second race Under J Ka cala the son of Hey Diddle Diddle led all the way to defeat Strait Jacket by two lengths with Renaissance and Polly Diskin completing the field The four horses raced the entire distance in that order orderBacked Backed into oddson favoritism Mrs A B Letelliers Chief Bunting made good in com ¬ manding fashion in the third event a six furlongs dash Taking the lead at the start after delaying the start for more than five minutes Chief Bunting set the pace all the way drawing out in the stretch when Monks First tired At the end the winner was eased up to score by two and a half lengths with Ramus five lengths back of the second horse Arcaro rode the winner his second of the day dayMaking Making his first start and performing in faultless fashion L De Carlos Grand Way easily dominated the six other maiden juve ¬ niles engaged in the fourth race over five furlongs Well suited by the sloppy track Grand Way was rushed to the front by L Hardy and thereafter just galloped along comfortably ahead of the others His final margin over Grey Pal was three lengths while Commandant made up some ground to take third place Magic Line had early speed and raced greenly and should im ¬ prove proveThe The fifth race bringing out five ordinary sprinters resulted in a decisive victory for L Tiffanys Curb Bit which had to be hard ridden by J King to get to the front in the stretch Once in command however the Bright Knot gelding drew out to triumph by two lengths over Aliens which enjoyed a margin of four lengths over King Pin with Alma S the well backed favorite beaten a neck for third Aliens was the early leader with Alma S second but both tired tiredFinishing Finishing with a strong rush on the out ¬ side Wayward Lad won the seventh race another threequarters sprint for M S Skaggs Snaplock installed the favorite although making his first start of the year finished second beaten a half length after setting the pace to the final sixteenth
