THRILLING STEEPLECHASE Riderless Ghost Dancer Causes In ¬ terference Racing Through Field Serious Accident Narrowly Averted by byClever Clever Horsemanship of Jockey JockeySmoot Smoot NEW XORK N Y June 27 A short course steeplechase which was a substitute race furnished many a thrill with Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Hole High beating Dr J P Jones Depart with John Bosley Jrs Swansea finishing a distant third Then after the running N Brown who had the mount on Depart lodged a claim of foul against Chailie Smoot who rode Hole High HighThere There were two mishaps in the running and they came to the two amateur riders when R P Hamilton was unseated from Ghost Dancer at the first fence while at the water jump Some Hero unseated W B Cocks Both riders were able to walk from the course courseThe The thrills that came in the running were for the most part caused by the riderless Ghost Dancer which went along with the field and he interferred to a great extent with Hole High and then in the closing stages he hampered Depart DepartSwansea Swansea was the one to cut out the run ¬ ning as he escaped the interference from Ghost Dancer and seemed to have a good winning chance until he made a bad landing five fences from the finish and dropped back badly badlyWhile While Swansea was showing the way Ghost Dancer without his rider moved up into second place racing through the field As he came alongside Hole High Smoot made an effort to drive him from the course and all that was accomplished was to cause him to swerve over on Swansea The Bos ley jumper quickly recovered from the bumping but Ghost Dancer continued to bother Hole High and Smoot was kept busy virtually riding two horses horsesThen Then when Swansea made his bad land ¬ ing Depart moved into command but Hole High was close after him and had saved ground going to the fence Ghost Dancer was right with them and at the upper end of the course he went into the lead Both Depart and Hole High were in danger of being carried out by the loose horse when the front field was reached and there Smoot crossed sharply to the inside and it was Depart that was bothered botheredAgain Again over the last fence Smoot had to herd the loose horse but he eventually had Hole High over the line winner by three lengths Depart had beaten Swansea twenty lengths and Lavisby the only other to fin ¬ ish was another ten lengths back The herd ¬ ing of Ghost Dancer in the closing stages of the race interferred with Depart but there seamed no reason for the claim of foul made by Brown BrownWith With three of the six races at Aqueduct yesterday substitutes for the orginal pro ¬ gram intended it was natural that the card was devoid of a feature The feature position was given over to a six furlongs claiming affair that engaged seven rather smart sprinters This resulted in another victory for the consistent Master Charlie filly Laurel Miss when she carried the silks of Mrs Kathleen Jesberger to an easy score Back of her John C Clarks Erebus and J V Stewarts Bally Bay fought it out in the order named and they were well before Apprehensive ApprehensiveWhile While the day was cloudy with a threat of rain conditions were decidedly agreeable for the big crowd that showed interest even with platers to furnish the entertainment
