Here and There on the Turf Latonia Derby Promises Battle Natural Stayers Engaged Seek Death of Illinois Racing Dark Secret Ripe for Brooklyn Saturdays running of the Latonia Derby will find two natural stayers clashing over the mile and a half distance with a third candidate also having given evidence the long route will find him not suffering from a disadvantage The two natural routers are Mrs Payne Whitneys Rose Cross and Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes Time Clock The suspected stayer is William Sachsenmaiers Plight Neither of the three can be men ¬ tioned in the same breath with Cavalcade but they have their class and their meeting should be exciting to a large degree degreeTime Time Clock has been chasing Cavalcade since he accounted for the Florida Derby on St Patricks Day and failed to land in the picture in any of the races in which he was of assistance to the Lancegaye colt but each effort found him making up ground in the late stages Being a long striding colt he was at some disadvantage in the large fields present for those events so the small field likely for the Latonia Derby will be just to his liking He will have plenty of time to settle into his stride and with Mack Garner in the saddle he will have the benefit of a jockey who probably has ridden in more distance races than any other boy now in action actionIn In meeting Rose Cross the Brookmeade colt will be engaging a lad which proved in last Saturdays running of the Dwyer Stakes that the mile and a half distance is attractive to him The son of St Germans ran the last quarter of the Dwyer in 25 and was not extended at the end and a colt that can do this must be feared in the coming special Furthermore Rose Cross will have no excuses for not being ready be ¬ cause he will require only a slow effort be ¬ tween the two events if he needs that much preparation On the other hand both Time Clock and Plight will be coming off a mile and a quarter special run two weeks earlier earlierIt It has been mentioned by a person close to the Brookmeade establishment that Time Clock can step a final quarter in twenty four seconds following a slow pace As the early running in the Latonia Derby promises to be done with minor speed the On Watch colt should have the chance to bear out this assertion As Rose Cross and Plight also appear capable of turning in pretty good efforts through the stretch a keen contest appears likely when the Latonia Derby field is called upon for its serious work Cincin ¬ nati racing fans can rightfully look forward to a real battle Saturday with the Derby shaping up as it does A group of Illinois legislators have placed before Gov Henry Horner a plan to reduce the parimutuel take from 6 12 per cent to 3 per cent also to increase the state tax on admissions from twenty cents to twentyfive cents Regardless of what reasons the legis ¬ lators may give for asking for such a reduc ¬ tion it seems apparent they want racing in this state abolished The sport is barely existing now with the 6 12 per cent take but it promises to improve A reduction in the take however will make the income of the tracks so small that it would be folly to continue in operation operationIf If the times were prosperous and the vol ¬ ume of business at the tracks was several times greater than what it is at present a reduction in the take would be very much in order and such a move would meet with public approval but just now such an idea is out of the question unless someone is anxious to take this method of killing the sport altogether Fortunately there seems to be too many friends of racing among the members of the Illinois legislature to allow such a plan to make much headway Continued on fifteenth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Dark Secret promises to be a hard horse to beat in the Brooklyn Handicap at Aque ¬ duct on the Fourth of July following his handy victory Tuesday He has been as ¬ signed 123 pounds for the mile and a furlong event to be stagedover his home course and will be the likely highweight among the starters as Equipoise which has been as ¬ signed 132 pounds is not expected to accept The veteran son of Flying Ebony has been allotted 123 pounds but the impost is well within his scope when he is right which is what he appears to be at the present time timeOpponents Opponents of Dark Secret in the Aqueduct attraction probably will be forthcoming from among Tick On War Glory and Dark Winter although one or two of the light ¬ weights may take a chance at knocking down the Wheatley Stable star Following the Brooklyn Dark Secret probably will go out to Chicago to take on the smart field promised for the 10000 Arlington Handicap It is interesting to note that Peace Chance handy winner of the Belmont Stakes has been assigned 112 pounds for the Brooklyn this being four pounds below the scale If he started in the race the threeyearold would have a good chance of being the fav ¬ orite over Dark Secret SecretMuch Much talk has been going on regarding the revival of racing at Syracuse by a group of persons headed by Leo Dandurand a partner of Joseph Cattarinich Plans made for the tenday season starting July 4 ap ¬ pear ambitious enough and with Thomas C Bradley and John I Day as the stewards with another to represent the New York State Racing Commission the sport will be in the hands of competent persons personsSuccess Success of the meeting depends on public patronage which will make itself felt in two ways by attendance and by betting If the bookmakers do not lay decent prices the public will remain away but if decent odds are offered and the racing is attractive the meeting stands an excellent chance of being successful One fortunate phase of wager ¬ ing in the books is that if the customer doesnt like the odds against the horse or his choice he can refrain from betting Of course the bookie wants business so it will not do for him to chisel on his prices
