LEFT WINGS GAME EFFORT Comes From Far Back to Defeat Smear by a Neck Fart Mitchell Country Club Purso Latonia LatoniaAttraction Attraction Grimace Takes Third Thirdin in Close Finish LATONIA Ky June 27 The Fort Mit ¬ chell Country Club Claiming Purse was the feature of Wednesdays program at Latonia and it brought out eight fair sprinters for a dash of six furlongs The winner in a rousing finish proved to be W E Smiths Left Wing with Smear second and Grimace third thirdLeft Left Wings victory was a well earned one for she came from far back on the upper turn to beat Smear by a neck while a half length farther back came Grimace The latter though beaten less than a length j might have given a better account of him ¬ self with a better ride Grimace set her own pace led all the way to the eighth post and despite weak riding by G Gruber hung on courageously courageouslyBoth Both Left Wing and Smear were slow finding their strides but on the turn they began to gain on the leaders and at the head of the stretch became definite threats From there to the finish it was a dingdong battle with the Smith filly finally winning winningThe The weather Wednesday was unbearably hot though a crowd of usual weekday pro ¬ portions was out to witness the sport The track was fast fastLaffoon Laffoon Yeisers Shepherd Boy was the easiest kind of winner in the Cynthiana Claiming Purse which brought together seven of the better class platers Taking command after going fiveeighths Shepherd Boy led for the remainder of the mile and a sixteenth and pulled up three and a half lengths in front of Stjensund Judge Judy was third thirdEarl Earl Baker owned by T M Botts was made an oddson favorite in the second race and those who backed him so confidently had little to worry about once the field got away Ridden by D Taylor the Botts representa ¬ tive was rushed into an early lead and he maintained a safe margin throughout At the finish he was two and a half lengths in front of Witches Night which raced clos ¬ est to the winner all the way Third money went to Grand Rock Witches Night hung close to Earl Baker for the first quarter but then dropped back and never menaced the leader thereafter Eight started but none of the others figured much in the run ¬ ning of the race
