ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 23.— A great display of speed in the Arlington I Futurity, featuring the final days program at Arlington Park, Saturday, appeared imminent today as candidates for the 0,000 special went ahead with their preparations. Over the week-end four of the outstanding candidates for the six furlongs sprint were I sharpened up by their trainers for the i serious work confronting them Saturday. St. Bernard, owned by Elmer Dale Shaffer, young Chicago sportsman, was "set down" by trainer Alex Gordon and the colt which recently came within one-fifth of a second of equalling the Arlington record for i five and a half furlongs, missed the mark for three-quarters by slightly more than a second in his Futurity trial yesterday morn- ing. Well in hand in the early stages, the son of Bull Dog and Eager Cissy went the opening quarter in :23%. Moving into top speed, St. Bernard reached the half mile in :46% and the five-eighths in :58%. He. completed the journey in 1:11%, going handily. By virtue of his impressive victory last week, in which he ran off from such capable youngsters as Mid Victorian, Fraidy Cat, Bye Lo and World Series, St. Bernard promises to be one of the Futurity favorites. Today, son of Whichone and Afternoon, sent here from New York by Cornelius Van-derbilt Whitney, was another Futurity hope showing a sparkling speed trial. He dashed five furlongs in :58% after going the quar-tre in :23 and half in :46% and was eased up three-quarters in 1:12%. "Sonny" Work- man has arrived here from New York to ride him. Hal Price Headleys double winner Preeminent took a step closer to condition for the Futurity by working five and a half furlongs in 1:07% handily. He started out with a quarter in :22%, reached the half in :47 and five-eighths in 1:00%. Bubbling Mate property of J. and H.
