WIDENER CAST-OFFS IN DUEL f I • I The Pelican and Crazy Jane Furnish Spirited Salem Contest. ♦ Mikel Colorbearer in Front at Finish — All Forlorn Earns Purse in Third Race. SALEM, N. H, July 23.— A sprint of five I furlongs was the principal offering on todays I I i program at Rockingham Park. This was the i j Stoneham Claiming Purse and was worth l i ,200. It provided one of the most thrilling ; I i contests of the meeting. Two former mem- • I bers of the Joseph E. Widener string, The i Pelican, now performing in the interest of ! J. D. Mikel, and Mrs. R. T. Flippens Crazy i Jane, fought it out closely lapped for four ■ of the five furlongs. Well back of the son and daughter of ! ! Haste, which finished in the order named, F. A. Griffiths Bittybit was third, well before I the Jersey Stables Postscript. March i Step headed Cabouse and Out Bound trailed I , throughout to complete the field. Crazy Jane was rushed to the front in i the opening strides. The Flippen filly continued • to hold a short advantage over the s gelding until near the stretch. The Mikel four-year-old assumed a slight : | lead on the outside of Crazy Jane, but was i I unable to draw away. Stride for stride they I battled it out through the stretch, well out I from the others. March Step had been 1 ! holding to third place, but surrendered that ; j position to Cabouse when the latter moved I I up fast midway on the turn. Bittybit and Postscript were farther back. Cabouse, when well into the stretch, dropped back and Bittybit, moving up with good speed, ! i raced into third place. The Pelican and Crazy Jane continued their duel to the win- j ning post, with the Mikel gelding gaining ; j the award. Crazy Jane held to her task : in courageous fashion and, though forced to i accept defeat by a narrow margin, had a I big advantage over the Griffith three-year- | old for second place. i Continued pleasant weather saw another ■ I large crowd on hand to witness the sport j that the platers provided. Adobe Post, the good distance plater that : races for H. H. Brown, chalked up his third 1 Continued on twenty-fifth page. Though the Cherokee gelding had , only three-quarters of a length to spare at j I the end over Biff, it could have been a much greater distance had Rollins had not j taken the winner in hand all through the j final sixteenth. War Plane, after following in nearest pursuit of the pace for the greater part of the journey, was third before Old Depot. ! Yonkel, a starter in this race, stood when ! the start came and just galloped along in back of the others. Integrity, well regarded, lacked speed and was far back all the way. Rollins hustled the winner to the front soon after the start and drew away into a long j lead, with War Plane racing in advance of 1 Biff. The leading trio continued to set the j pace. Adobe Post was never seriously i threatened, while Biff came gamely in the last quarter to supplant War Plane in the runner-up position. Toolbox made good in decisive fashion in the three-quarter mile dash for maiden juveniles that started off the days enter- , tainment. At the close of the sprint the Sir Greysteel gelding had a wide margin over Legume while Justa Jane held third place safe from Candy Maid. The Labrot representative was not hurried during the I early running. He began to move up on the , outside approaching the far turn. Legume had shown the way down the back stretch, closely attended by Unknown Soldier. j Hughes hustled Toolbox to the leader midway I of the turn, took command before the turn 1 I into the stretch was reached and drew out as if much the best. Legume made a bold effort to go along with the winner when challenged hut was not good enough though continuing determinedly to hold second place safe from the stretch challenge of Justa Jane. Toolbox was supported with confidence and returned a .50 mutuel for the usual ticket. The second race, a sprint of five and a half furlongs for platers three-years-old and *"• upward, valued at ,000, was taken by F. Spatolas Grace Blotter when the mare was up just in time to earn a nose decision over C. Turners Mynah. Grace Blotter and Mynah dominated the running throughout and it was not until the last stride that Grace Blotter got her nose in front and Flying Don, making a fast closing rush, was just beaten a neck for the place.
