1 • 1 I j I j I SAINT KTTTS EMPIRE WINNER . « — 1 Takes Measure of Village Vamp at Popular Yonkers Track. ♦ C. H. Knebelkamp and Jockey C. Rainey in Double Victory — Below Zero and Rivalry Score. • NEW YORK, N. Y., July 23.— Saint Kitta carried the silks of the Greentree Stable to victory in the best offering of the Empire City Association at the Hilltop track for the opening day of the last week of the meeting. This was a gallop of a mile and seventy yards for platers, and the son of St. Germans took the measure of Mrs. Frank Coltilettis Village Vamp, while well back of that maie, Legender, from the Howe Stable, took third trom Black Falcon. The only other starter was Her Gold, and she quit badly after having forced all the eaily pace. With more agreeable weather another big crowd was out for the card of overnight t races that furnished the entertainment. The ! sport was excellent and was marked by a double that went to C. H. "Pat" Knebelkamp 1 and his lider, C. Rainey, when after Below j Zero took the opening dash another of his I juveniles, Rivalry, was winner of the second race. , In the Fetnwood Purse, that went to Saint 1 Kitts, Sammy Renick had the mount on the son of St. Germans and, first away from an inner stall, he sent him right along with the pace furnished by Her Gold. This miss took command when the back stretch was reached, but she could not shake off the winner, wnile Renick held his rail position. * At the end of five furlongs the filly was ! beginning to tire and, after turning from the I back stretch, Saint Kitts took command. Renick permitted him to open up a lead I that saw him turn into the stretch two lengths in the lead, and it was ample to see him safely home. Village Vamp had acted j so badly r.t the post that she was taken outside the sails. She was away well, but was outrun as usual, trailing along in last place to the stretch. 1 There she began to race wide and, taking care of all the others, finished with a rush that landed her at the heels of Saint Kitts. Legender had been going along in third place while Her Gold was setting the pace, but he lost ground on the turns and tired badly when called on in the final quarter, being beaten two lengths for second place. Black Falcon had no excuse, but he beat Her Gold when the filly quit badly after her early exhibition of speed. C. H. Knebelkamps good filly Below Zero accounted for the opening dash at five furlongs in a driving finish with Currants, from the Greentree Stable and well back came R. R. Ashbrookes Back Fence to easily beat Abner for third. Currants broke running but he soon gave way to Below Zero and Rainey rushed the daughter of Tryster into a long lead that was to see her safely home. After swing* ing into the stretch two lengths clear, she was tiring in the final furlong, but still had half a length to spare at the line. Currants quickly found his way into a contending position and through the stretch he was wearing the winner down at every stride to beat Back Fence three lengths for second place and the Ashbrooke colt had no excuse, hanging badly under pressure. Lady Sable ran a disappointing race, as did Easy Flight while Abner met with some interference when he was shuffled back leaving the back stretch and forced later to go to the outside to find clear racing room. C. H. "Pat" Knebelkamp chalked up a double in the second race and it also completed a double for C. Rainey when he brought Rivalry home winner by a narrow margin over Philip Biebers Merry Bud. This was another driving finish but Merry Bud should have been winner. Chanove permitted Rainey to go through on the inside with Rivalry and he was so busily engaged watching the horses on the outside that he did not see Rivalry slipping up on the inside until it was too late and he was beaten. At the heels of the battling pair. Ike Perl-steins Gammon easily beat Recital for third and the others followed along in strung out order. James Kelleys General A., which has been an exceedingly busy plater of late, earned brackets in the five and three-quarters third race when, in a driving finish, he scored over Mrs. Kate Lauras Eldee and Miss E. Munroes Espinaca beat Erebus for third. At the end of the card, N. E. Stantons Big Show, after being reserved back of the pace furnished by Black Patricia, Stepbrother and Koterito, came away easily in the final quarter to be an easy winner by five lengths. Stepbrother had no trouble sav-j ing second from Koterito and Repeal beat the others.
