TEXAS DERBYS BIG FIELD Oullook Now for Sixteen Starters in Saturdays 5,000 Race. . .. Tuesdays Mile Test and Arlington Handicap to Decide Status of Several Prospective Contestants. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 16. With the running of the "Test Purse" today and tomorrows Arlington Handicap, only short, fast preparations will be the routine for the probable Texas Derby field before the running of that 5,000 stake Saturday afternoon at Arlington Downs. Todays mile test and the three-quarters spin of the Arlington Handicap serves as elimination races for Saturdays rich feature. Several trainers today were awaiting the outcome of the Arlington Handicap before deciding definitely if their charges will be called upon for the mile and an eighth journey. However, these two races possibly will eliminate only the doubtful starters. Phil Reuter, part owner and the trainer of Roman Soldier, and Robert Mc-Garvey, trainer of Whiskolo, have said that these two leading eligibles will go postward, barring some unforeseen mishap. Furfiber is another definite starter, while McCarthy, Whizzaway, Eddie J., Wise Player and South Gallant have been prepared with the Derby in view. After his winning, effort Monday, Ben A. Jones, trainer of T. C. Wordens Prince Splendor, announced that the son of Bos-tonian would fill his Derby engagements. Jones is reserving Hope Eternal in the event of a muddy track. There also will be a change in the Milky Way Farms starters in case of a muddy track, with Galla Clay replacing South Gallant as Whiskolos running mate. Another eligible was added to the probable field when Charles Irby announced this morning that in the event Cross Ruff performed favorably in the mile test, he would be among the starters. Cross Ruff replaces Glittering, which was shipped to Louisville today after failing to respond to treatment for a foot injury sustained in his last effort. A check of the weights for the Derby field reveals that the colts and geldings will carry 120 pounds, and the fillies, Hasty Glance, Hope Eternal and Dark Woman, will get in at 115 pounds. With none of the eligibles having earned 0,000 at one time during their two years of racing, they all receive six pounds allowance, with the fillies also fayored with an additional five pounds. However, in the event Black Helen had accepted she would have been called upon to carry the top weight of 121 pounds. The field, with weights, jockeys and probable odds, follows: , Horse. Wt. Jockey.
