SOUTH ON THREE WINNERS Pilots Open Hearth to Victory in Handicap at Latonia Shoemaker Racer Turns Tables on Old OldRivals Rivals Weather Conditions Unset tied Threatening Rain LATONIA Ky June 14 Open Hearth disappointing son of Sir Greysteel and Flor estine which races for H G Shoemaker turned the tables on his arch rivals today when he came through with a vastly im ¬ proved performance to take the White Fence Farm Handicap which topped a rather good program The winner under an im ¬ post of 107 pounds gave a remarkable demonstration of speed during the final threeeighths of the one mile and onesix ¬ teenth that carried him into first place His winning margin was a length and onehalf and registered in the fast time of 144 for the distance Safe and Sound under the colors of H W W J Young came to the end in second place half a length in front of the oddson favorite Fiji which finished third The three others that completed the field High Diver Mountainy Man and Dis ¬ aster finished in the order mentioned mentionedThe The start was delayed a short time while getting Mountainy Man to enter the stall gate He finally did and starter Hamilton caught them in good alignment Fiji was rushed to the front and was under mild re ¬ serve while racing f orwardly Mountainy Man offered a couple of challenges which the filly readily repulsed and as they left the back stretch she drew away to a more comfortable lead Open Hearth which was far back alternated with High Diver in last place while Safe and Sound was fighting it out with Fiji As they came to the final eighth Safe and Sound took a slight lead Open Hearth however continued with his gallant charge and heading the leading pair at the sixteenth post had ho difficulty there ¬ after going on to score easily It was the third winner for jockey G South SouthWeather Weather conditions were somewhat un ¬ settled and the days sport opened under heavily laden skies which threatened rain but up to the time this was written it failed to materialize Another good crowd was on hand to view the sport conducted over a fast track trackAn An inferior band of sprinters met in the opening dash at six furlongs It resulted in a decisive win for the Kenton Farms Roberta which led from start to finish crossing the line three lengths to the good El Bandido was the one to place while Camp Cook closed in third position There was a surprising play for Our Sammy and Exponent but neither of the pair figured seriously at any time during the running While the latter did give a respectable per ¬ formance Our Sammy never reached con ¬ tention under a weak ride rideField Field Day a member of the stable of Mose Goldblatt and grouped in the mutuel field accounted for his first racing victory when he turned back eleven others from the juvenile maiden ranks Mary Seibert raced to second place while third went to an outsider when Highland Lane brought the colors of Dixiana to the end in that posi tion The race was marred when Gyral one of the choices bolted sharply in the stretch when leading by a clear margin Despite the valiant efforts of jockey C Beasy he continued a weaving course which virtually eliminated him Hildrum strong favorite for the third was the first performer to vindicate the judgment of the talent when she romped home an easy winner closing with a two and onehalf length advantage over Just Buck with third going to King Cicero The winner placed f orwardly after the start was under mild reserve while Doubleton set the pace the opening half but when subjected to urging made short work of the leader then drew away to win in hand Hal Ray was the good thing here but at no time dur ¬ ing the running did he have speed enough to gain a contending position It was the sec ¬ ond winner for South who had previously scored with Field Day in the second race raceThe The fourth titled the Fountain Square Purse brought out seven of the better grade juveniles for a test of fiveeighths It afforded Mary Terry speedy daughter of Terry Milfoil to chalk up her third win of the meeting While the victress turned in a sterling performance in negotiating the dis ¬ tance in the fast time of 100 her task was more exacting than any which sha has assumed Jiere She was under brisk pres ¬ sure to outfinish Geo Gable to lead him home by a scant half length The latter might have been a more formidable rival but jockey F Fernandez lost his whip at the crucialmoment at the sixteenth post Orien ¬ tal Miss which finished third gave a good effort to garner that award coming from a good distance back to pass Peter Pumpkin
