PRECURSOR RACES TO VICTORY Saddle Spur Stable Colorbearer Scores at Detroit Highland Park Handicap Feature of Pro ¬ gram Winsldw Pays Long Odds in Fifth Race DETROIT Mich June 14 The Saddle Spur Stables Precursor was returned a driving and popular winner of the High ¬ land Park Handicap that featured the pro ¬ gram this afternoon Showing slight im ¬ provement over his last effort here the fouryearold son of Canter reached the end of the mile and a sixteenth a half length before Fred Alger Jrs Sabula which led F J Estes Glynson by a length for second secondArson Arson a winner of his last three engage ¬ ments was fourth three lengths in the wake of Glynson and three lengths before Eddie J Chastity the only other contestant was far back throughout throughoutAfter After Sabula had raced into a clear lead during the first half mile the winner re ¬ sponded to Eddie Legeres strong urging and taking command entering the stretch drew clear of the Alger mare However he too tired in the last stages and was under strong pressure in withstanding Sabula which held on in the best of fashion Glyn ¬ son always the best of the others never gave up the chase chaseArson Arson and Chastity which came in for good support were far back throughout throughoutPrecursor Precursor was the second winning favor ¬ ite of the afternoon afternoonSummerlike Summerlike weather prevailed for the Derby eve program and the gathering was one of the largest to attend for a weekday offering The racing strip was at its best bestSupporting Supporting the feature was the Farming ton Purse for grade E performers and it resulted in another of the many surprises when Winslow was returned an easy win ¬ ner Second went to Pan Toy with Bi ¬ chloride third thirdShowing Showing improvement over his last ef ¬ fort and always in closest pursuit of the pacemaking Pan Toy Winslow took com ¬ mand entering the stretch to lead Pan Toy by three and a half lengths at the finish Two lengths separated the latter and Bi ¬ chloride which got up to beat Crowned Head a neck for minor honors Bichloride was an even money choice but he showed little to merit his support supportPlayers Players of field horses came into their own in the first race for maiden plater twoyearolds when Aldrich Winans Jackfull rewarded at his first asking The son of Jack High and Alert took the lead at the start to be three parts of a length before the heavily supported Sakuntala when the finish was reached Forced to come from last place in the field of twelve Bereit got up to be a nose back of Sakuntala and three lengths before Joan W at the end endA A nose finish and surprise climaxed the second race with R B Allens Magic Line lasting to beat Thistle Jock which faltered slightly at the end Two lengths separated Thistle Jock arid More Pep at the end of the six furlongs furlongsTwelve Twelve plater threeyearolds started with the winner racing Night Ray into defeat during the run to the far turn However after drawing clear of the others he was put to strong urging in withstanding Thistle Jock which raced around on the outside to offer his determined challenge Vignolas Bud a well supported choice was done after threeeighths threeeighthsIn In another thrilling finish J D Mikels Sarazen II eked out a head triumph over Don Vern Cloido and six others that met at threequarters in the third race Charles Stevenson who was astride his second straight winner drove the aging High Time gelding into the lead entering the stretch but was forced to put him to strong urging in withstanding Don Vern which was lucky to beat the fastclosing Cloido a nose for second Kalola was a head back of the lat ¬ ter and a half length before Racketeer The winner enjoyed favoritism favoritismJ J D Mikel furnished his second winner when Ridgeview led Lanier a fielder Drombo and eight others to the finish of the fourth race After being the chief cause of the long delay at the start the winner began slowly Working her way forward through the middle of the field she came to the outside for the drive to wear down Lanier in the closing furlong and be a length and a half before him at the end While Lanier and Drombo held on well Pretty Monk quit rapidly after relinquish ¬ ing the lea to Lanier Sophist which en ¬ joyed favoritism showed little
