LITTLE NYMPH BY A NECK Chalks Up Her First Victory of Year in Winning Artfut Purse. t Vigorous Finish Marks Decision of Mondays Feature at Arlington Downs, With Tommy Luther Starring. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 6. Little Nymph, fashionably-bred daughter of Bull Dog and winner of the Beaver Tail Claiming Stakes last year, chalked up her first victory of the year in accounting for the Artful Purse, fifth and principal race of an attractive program offered at Arlington Downs this afternoon. She reached the end of the short six furlongs of the Waggoner course a neck before R. C. Thatchers Cot-tingham, which led Z. E. McGregors Always Blue by two lengths for second. My Dainty carried the Three Ds colors into fourth position, with My Auntie and Emigrante completing the small field. Although a sharp wind made conditions far from pleasant, sunny skies prevailed and a good-sized crowd was on hand as the Texas Jockey Club swung into its second full week of spring racing. The veteran Tommy Luther directed Little Nymph, which carried Mrs. J. Freedmans colors and Houston owned, she was the second choice to the heavily supported My Auntie. There was little delay before the start and Cottingham was the first under way. My Dainty was right after her with the winner showing the way to the others. At the far turn, My Dainty was pinched back and soon afterwards the winner began to shorten Cottinghams margin. However, Cottingham held on in fine style and the winner did not get to the front until the last stages. . While Always Blue was forced to lose ground throughout, Emigrante was the victim of adverse luck. Longden made several attempts to drive her through on the inside during the run to the far turn, and finding room she refused to extend herself. Near-ing the stretch My Auntie moved into third position but she gave way iri the stretch to have only Emigrante beaten at the end. The winner ran the distance in 1:09, and paid .30 for each straight ticket. Gin Daisy, gray daughter of Royal Ford and Gen Rickey, which was beaten by small margins in both of her previous starts, graduated from the maiden ranks when she carried the Three Ds Stock Farms colors to an easy and extremely popular victory over Robert L., Brown Prodigy and eight other non-winning youngsters in the first race. Ridden by Albert Beck, the gray filly sprinted into a clear lead during the opening furlong of the half mile dash and although she swerved slightly in the stretch she reached the end a length and one-half before the lightly regarded Robert L., which beat Brown Prodigy by the same margin for second. The winner ran the distance in :47 and within a second of the track record. Another of the thrilling finishes that have prevailed since the, opening and nearly a tout of choices came with the second race at the Waggoner course distance when W. A. Mikels Rustic Lassie, Three Ds Stock Farm Stables tailless Bronc Rider and Able Abe reached the finish in cavalry alignment and two lengths before Imperial Maryan. Eleven three-year-olds started, with Brigade B. and La Junta White showing the way to the final furlong, where Imperial Maryan forged to the front. However, she weakened rapidly and it was no task for the winner,, Bronc Rider and Able Abe to sweep by her. Imperial Maryan was the favorite. Fancy Flight, useful daughter of Infinite, which races for Joe Roberts, rewarded her backers that made her an even money choice when she was a driving winner of the third race, also a Waggoner course sprint No Saint, which was showing an improved ef-iortt was second, a neck back of the winner and three and a half lengths before Baby Sweep, which lasted to beat the fast-finishing Oscillation by a neck for minor hoonrs. Johnny Deering had the Roberts mare in the van at the start and although No Saint was a stubborn foe during the run through the stretch she lasted to the end. With the exception of Marcia, which gave way after three-eighths, the others of the field of nine were never factors. Dan Brammer, who became Americas leading rider when he won the eighth race here Saturday, increased his lead over Leroy Pierson when he brought C. W. Pershctlls Judge Leer, to the finish of the fourth race at the Waggoner course distance an easy winner. Bartering Kate, which enjoyed favoritism was second, and Whisking third. The winner ran the distance in 1:08, the fastest time of the meeting for the short three-quarters. Eight topnotch sprinting platers started with Bartering Kate taking command in the first few strides. Brammer, had the winner right after her and they raced in close order to the final furlong, where, Judge Leer drove to the front to lead Bartering Kate by two lengths at the end. The latter was slightly more than a length before Wh;sking which saved ground throughout. During the run to the stretch Wise Anne and Indiantown enjoyed prominent positions and while Indiantown held on well to finish fourth, Wise Anne quit badly. . Z. E. McGregor added another horse to his stable when he claimed Imperial Maryan put of the second, race at Arlington Downs for ,500. J
