r----------------------------f j Re-Elected President A.---------------------------- COL. MATT WINN Col. Matt Winn on Monday was re-elected president of the American Turf Association, an honor he has had every year since the organization of the corporation, which operates more high-class race tracks than any similar body in America. The genial Ken-tuckians joy in the honor was clouded somewhat by the date fight in Chicago, but he is a veteran of many turf wars and forgot his troubles for a time while receiving the congratulations of his many friends. The American Turf Association operates Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby will be run May 2, the Latonia track at Covington, and the Lincoln Fields track at Crete, 111. A1 the officers and directors were reelected: Winn, as president; Stuyvesant Pea-body, vice-president, and Maurice Galvin, secretary-treasurer. The board of directors are J. N. Camden, chairman; M. J. Winn, S. Peabody, Henning Chambers, Lawrence Jones, A. B. Hancock, J. T. Connery, C. Bruce Head, E. J. Hughes, Sam Stone, Walter H. Girdler, C. W. Bidwill, Henry O. Gray, Bruce Campbell, C. S. Ellis, Donald McDonald and Lawrence Jones, Jr. Col. Matt Winn, one of Americas most beloved turf personages and the man who stages the world-famous Kentucky Derby each yeai", is seriously alarmed over the present date squabble in Illinois with its possible entry into the civil courts. He is fully satisfied that the National Jockey Club is determined to push the fight to the. limit, and in that event sees nothing but disaster, his experience of more than half a century as a race track owner having taught him that court action invariably reacts in such a way as to either seriously cripple the sport or to kill it entirely. "Lincoln Fields," said Colonel Winn, "stands ready to concede five of its racing days to Sportsmans Park. All we ask in return is that the racing commission restore Labor Day to us, which is ours by prior right. For seven years we have had Labor Day, but despite this Lincoln Fields has lost money for the past three years. Even with a big pickup in business last year, we lost money, a trifling amount it is true, but- a loss nevertheless. How can we hope to make money without Labor Day this year? "I have interceded with Arlington, Washington Park and Hawthorne to step forward with me and make minor concessions to keep this thing out of court. I have had no response, but today at the meeting Lincoln fields went on record as being more than willing to do its share. We have an investment of ,500,000 in Lincoln Fields. Only Arlington Park, possibly, can show a Creator expenditure."
