LATONIA INAUGURAL » Everything in Readiness for Saturdays Opening of Popular Track. ■ 1 Thirteen Probable Starters in 5,-000 Added Latonia Derby, Stellar Feature of Initial Card. # LATONIA, Ky., May 21.— With the opening of the thirty-seven-day summer meeting here and the fifty-fourth runing of the 5,000 added Latonia Derby only a few hours away, the complexion of the mile and a quarter feature on Saturday takes on a more or less definite shape. Of the thirty-six which were nominated for the three-year-old fixture, thirteen still are listed among the possible starters and seven of them are considered almost certain to line up at the barrier. Those which now appear definite starters are H. P. Headleys Hollyrood, which is expected to be the post favorite; E. R. Bradleys Bow and Arrow, which also will command respect from the public; the Tranquillity Farms Songmaker; Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Silas; the Parkview Stables Prince Fellow; the Superior Stables Holl Image, and Dixianas Erin Torch. Rounding out the group from which several additional entries may be drawn are the Greentree Stables Memory Book; C. V. Whitneys Tatterdemalion; W. C. Goodloes Seventh JHeaven; Mrs. H. H. Hectors Wise Duke; C. |R. Thompsons Mary Terry and J. P. Halls Airforce. The Bradley colorbearer and Holl Image, winner of the Arkansas Derby, were to be shipped here today from Chicago, while Latonia officials today were still awaiting word from the East as to whether Memory Book and Tatterdemalion would be sent here for Saturdays rich prize. All of the other possible Derby horses already are on the grounds. AIRFORCE NAME ADDED. Airforces name was added to the list of possible starters today by his owner, who is so pleased with the improvement In the colts form and his training that he indicated that the son of Diavolo might be sent in the mile and a quarter contest. In most cases riders already have been engaged for the horses. Headley, who was here to see Hollyrood work a mile this morning, left for Lexington and while there will contact an Eastern jockey to handle the colt in the Derby, while Joe Renick is expected to have the mount on the Bradley racer. S. Coucci probably will ride Memory Book and Ray Workman will have the leg up on Tatterdemalion if they are shipped here for the race. Willie Garner will pilot Silas, H. W. Fisher already has drawn the assignment on Holl Image; P. Grill will be astride Seventh Heaven; Charles Stevenson will handle Erin Torch; Willie Moran will be Songmakers jockey; Herman Schutte will ride Prince Fellow and Lee Canfield will be astride Mary Terry. Regardless of the number of starters in the Derby, the stake is expected to have an interesting renewal; the list of certain starters assures that. While Hollyrood is expected to be the reigning favorite, there are a number of others which are sure to command followings, and the manner in which they have been disporting themselves, both in races and in training indicates they may be hard to master. HOLLYROODS FINE WORK. Both Hollyrood and Songmaker were given their final long trials for the race this morning, the Headley star going a mile and the Tranquillity racer traveling an eighth farther. Both of them went easily and each emphasized his fitness to contest the mile and a quarter of Saturdays fixture. Hollyrood covered the eight furlongs of his work in 1:45, while Songmaker did his mile and a furlong in 1:59, the mile in 1:46. All of the other Derby candidates on the ground were given less strenuous exercises. While the Derby Saturday, of course, will attract the principal attention of patrons, the Netherland Plaza Handicap, a dash at six furlongs, promises to be an interesting contest and a fitting supporting feature for the three-year-old stake. Nominations to the handicap, which is for three-year-olds and Continued on twenty-second paoe. latonia Inaugural Continued from first page. upward, close today and the list of early entries already assures a good race. Among those which are entered are Grand Duke and the former worlds six furlongs record holder Myrtlewood, owned by Brownell Combs; W. E. Smiths Likewise; Mose Gold-blatts Gilbert Elston; D. W. Butlers Manners Man; C. E. McClains Greenspring Lad; Jack Howards Blue Gauntlet; Kirby Ramseys Mucho Gusto and the F. L. B. Stables Kingsbury and Miss Melody. With entries open all day and weights not to be announced it is expected that a number of others will be named for the Netherland Plaza and that a field of perhaps a dozen will contest for the ,000 purse. As interest in both the Derby and the meeting generally increases, Latonia officials and employes are rushing to completion plans for the opening. Both the managers office of Russell Sweeney and the racing secretarys office of William H. Shelley presented busy aspects this morning and each official was confident that Saturdays inaugural would be Latonias best in many years. With the exception of Samuel C. Nuckols, associate steward, the official family at Latonia was fully assembled Thursday. Nuckols is due here Friday, presiding steward Charles F. Price and associate stewards C. Bruce Head and Samuel H. McMeekin were here Thursday to consider license applications and to attend to such other matters in connection with their positions.
