WITHERS STAKES SATURDAY * Ten Star Three -Year-Olds Probable Starters For Rich Old Fixture. « Brevity to Meet Red Rain, Mr. Bones, Coldstream, Memory Book and Other Prominent Members of Division. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 21.— With all the serious preparation of the candidates for the Withers Stakes completed, it is expected that a field of ten will go to the post for this old mile fixture to which ,000 is added by the Westchester Racing Association. This may be pruned down, but ten of them have trained in a manner to indicate an intention of going to the post. The ten expected to make up the field are C. V. Whitneys Red Rain, Joseph E. Wideners Brevity, John Hay Whitneys Mr. Bones, Edward R. Bradleys Bien Joli, the Brookmeade Stables Delphinium, C. B. Shaffers Coldstream, Greentree Stables Memory Book, Walter M. Jeffords Jean Bart, Ogden Phipps White Cockade and A. G. Vanderbilts Postage Due and Speed to Spare. Should all of these appear under silks, the Withers will gross 1,900, making it a prize of first importance. Last year, when the Withers went to William duPonts Rose-mont, its value to the winner was 1,250 with nine going to the post. The expected field holds out promise of one of the most remarkable runnings of the Withers, which goes back to Old Jerome Park with its first running in 1874, when Dublin was the winner. On through its glorious history, the names of many a champion appear in the winning roster, and a great majority of winners carried on to greater deeds through years of usefulness. Just a few of these notables have been Crickmore, Hanover, Sir Dixon, King Eric, Domino, Colin, The Finn, Rock View, Hour-less, Sir Barton, Man o War, Zev, Chance Shot, Blue Larkspur, Whichone, Jamestown and Singing Wood. Many of these, after a brilliant career on the turf, went on to enrich the American blood lines when retired to the stud. In many of the runnings there has been a standout colt, but for the renewal tomorrow there are at least four in the probable field that appear to be exceedingly close together as far as public performances is concerned. These are Red Rain, Brevity, Mr. Bones and Bien Joli. Then there is Coldstream that might be added to these, for he ran a dead heat with Red Rain in the Saratoga Special last August. Brevity, winner of the Florida Derby, surely lost little prestige when just beaten by Bold Venture in the Kentucky Derby, and since that running he has been working well for Pete Coyne and is at the top of his form. Red Rain, though beaten in his only start of the year by Delphinium, is generally looked upon as the greatest menace to Brevity. Then, Mr. Bones has been coming along so magnificently that it would not be surprising if he whipped the pair of them. Delphinium, though he ran a disappointing race recently, need only come back to his performance when he took the measure of Red Rain to be a serious contender. Bien Joli has done all that has been asked of him by "Dick" Thompson, and Coldstream has come along exceedingly well under the direction of Alex Gordon. Both Postage Due and Speed to Spare, in their race against Mr. Bones, proved their worth and while White Cockade has disappointed under silks, he has worked well at Aqueduct for James Fitzsimmons. Jean Bart has had a thorough seasoning and likes the route, so that altogether the field is sure to bring a great contest.
